large litters?
 
For those of you who have had girls with larger litters...How many were there and did your girl have complications because there were so many?
My molly had 1 tie and delivered 7 puppies 59 days later, last October.

My mothers dog Missy (Molly's sister) is expecting her first litter on Oct 2nd and the vet saw 7 puppies today!

Do these large litter sizes run in the family?
Will a girl deliver early because of the number of expectant pups?

I'd love to share any helpful advice with Mom for those who care to share...Thanks in advance:aimeeyork

Lexi delivered 4 days early (5 pups) last week.

Was this her first litter?

Missy weighs on the end side of 7 pounds usually and today weighed in at 11! She looks absolutely pregnant! Still her happy self...I know that will change...

Someone on here had a 7 pup litter one time...but I don't remember who it was. :( I know that with larger litters eclampsia is a bigger risk for the bitch.
Not sure if it run in the family or not.

My Molly had a litter of 7 last year, We lost one little boy who had his intestines on the outside when he was born, And other than bottle feeding one little guy every 2 hours (The baby I just had to keep..Gus)We did not have any other complications...

So I just want to keep a good look out for what might be possible.

Roxie had 6 pups her firsst litter and had to have a c-section to deliver the last two because she got too tuckered out. She had 7 pups the second litter and got eclampsia when they turned 3 weeks old. I almost lost her that time so I had her spayed and placed her into a pet home.

This was her 2nd litter.
Really fast delivery all 5 popped out in 1 hr 25 min.
Lexi & the pups are doing well.
Lexi had severe diareah up untill yesterday.
her reg weight is 6 lbs - delivery weight was 8 lbs 12 ozs.

So from what I understand, eclampsia could happen during pregnancy, after and in future pregnancies...
and has to do with calcium..Is that correct?
How did your girl act? what advice would you have?

And I do believe Mom will be spaying her dog after this pregnancy...

Oh and her name is Millie, Missy is one of her other dogs that has been very sick for the last 2 months, she has put thousands of dollars on vet bills and they still have no clue on what has caused her to stop eating and to go into kidney failure...

My Mia had a litter of seven. Six of them survived the other one was not fully developed. She had all of them within less then 3 hours with no complications. and her last litter she had six also and all survived. No complications also. She weighs normally 6-7 pounds.

I wish your baby all the luck in the world and happy whelping.:)

My Zoey delivered 5 puppies. 4 survived one was deformed (the intestine was outside his belly) She had emergency c-section because of just I cannot stand her being in pain. That was her first and last litter. She weights 4 and a half lbs before pregnancy. Now she weighs 6 lbs. And happy as can be with her pups.

Eclampsia is caused by the failure of the parathyroid to release calcium that is stored in the bones. It usually occurs during lactation when the call for calcium is high. It will begin with a slight weakness, move to tremors, and end in collapse when muscles start shutting down. It can result in death as the heart ( and all muscles) requires calcium to contract and will stop beating. Knowing the early signs of eclampsia is vitally important as once it starts the dog will go down very quickly. Internveinious calcium treatment is required to save the dog in most cases. Once the bitch has had eclampsia there is a much higher chance of reoccurance.

Thank you Tami, I will be doing more research on eclampsia, much more...

My Nala (7 lb. Morkie) had a litter of 7 her first litter
Then this past April she had a litter of 8 !!!!

It was a bit scary for the tiny boy for a couple days.
I had to supplement 3 for a couple days...Then all was well :)
Nala had no problems what so ever...during her pregnancy...whelping or after.
Other then she was so sick of diapering and nursing puppies by about 4 weeks...lol
Nana had to go on Poop patrol and mushy food to help out :)
