Spay at 6months...or after first heat?
 
First off let me apologise if this has been asked a million times before....when I took my puppy to the vets I was given lots of information about spaying (the health benefits etc) and it says that it can be done at 6months or that some prefer to wait until their dog has had their first heat. my question is does it make a difference? I was going to have her spayed at 6 months but are their any pros to waiting until she has had her first heat? Thanks in advance xxx xxx

I waited til Roxie was 8 months old because I dreaded putting her under. She came into heat 3 days prior to he surgery so we had to reschedule. Heat made her more reserved and not herself. Then she had a false pregnancy which wasn't fun for her and I finally got her spayed in August. She did fine. I would have peferred to have mine spayed prior to heat based on my experience. JMO

Thanks for sharing your experience.....I'm worried about putting Twinkle under too.....but she is already 5lb at 12 weeks so I'm thinking she'll be a nice solid weight by the time she's 6months - is it right that it's less risky for them if they are bigger? (sorry if I sound really dumb!) It doesn't sound like there are any benefits to me waiting for her to have her first heat before I have her spayed then.................?

I got Jewels done right at 6 mos because I heard they have no chance of getting mammary cancer if you do it before ther first heat. She was only 4 lbs and did fine

I didn't realise that it eliminates their chance of getting mammary cancer at all if spayed before their first heat so thanks so much for that info:D Am pleased that all went well, that's very reassuring to hear xxx xxx

how much does weight play in? Is 3 - 3 1/2 lbs small for getting spayed?

No as long as shes 2 lbs or more they will do the spay Im sure she will be fine

Yes I'd be interested in knowing about weight too. Is it safer to wait until a yorkie is a certain weight before spaying? At the moment Twinkle is 12weeks and 5lb, obviously I have no idea how much more she will weigh by 6months of age but what weight is considered 'safe'? xx

Thanks. She will be 19 weeks tomorrow so I'm thinking that she won't be much bigger by 6 mos.

A dog who is spayed before her first heat has a 0% chance of ever getting mammary cancer. After the first heat the risk rises to 8% and to 25% if spayed after her second heat.

i would get her spayed asap. i had the same conflict and i made the mistake of waiting til after the first heat and mitzy had problems when they spayed her because of it.. i just wouldnt want to risk it again

After reading replies like this and also the one from Ladymom, I will definitely be getting Twinkle spayed before her first heat, so thanks for all the information.....it's put my mind at rest that I'm doing the healthiest thing for my dog, which is what I was most concerned about. xxx xxx

i think earlier the better.. i didnt mean to scare you either im sorry i feel bad.. she healed fine i guess it just makes the procedure harder?? not sure but she bled from her sutures alot because of it

either way your baby will be fine.. just make sure no jumping or running!! lol

Oh don't feel bad! U didn't scare me hun:)I was just curious as to whether there were any health benefits to waiting till after her first heat.....but it seems that all the benefits come from having them spayed before...Thanks so much for your reply:Dxxx xxx
