My sweet girlss in heat Im not interested in breeding her shes way too little at four pounds but im trying to figure out how long to keep them separated? we started noticing him checking her out and her snipping at him last sunday (9/7) and they've been appart since so about a week and a half but i think shes done but im afraid to put them together yet just in case. We were planning to fix him but were waiting for him to get a bit Older and put some weight on as the anesthesia scares me, hes just now eight months so i was waiting for the end of summer and the kids to get back to school to make the appointment go figure shed go into heat the second week of school :) Im playing it safe i figure im probly safe but i wanted to check with the pros. just to be sure. also is it normal for them to act so depressed when they are separated like this? weve been jokingly been calling them romeo and juliet one will be in the kenel and one will just lay on the floor gazing at the other and they will just lay ont he floor just gazing at each other wimpering lightly, its so sad :) Thanks guys megan |
heat last several weeks |
They are bonded as a pack and will miss each other during separation. They'll be okay, it's normal. Heat cycle lasts an average of 21 days from start of color show to finish. Count 21 dyas after she started showing color and you should be safe. Keep an eye on them though, I had a breeding happen at 20 days. It was too late for a pregnancy but he tried anyway. It was upsetting and cost me in vet bills for the ultrasound etc. so it's better to be safe than sorry. I applaud you for being responsible and protecting your little gal. |
wow im so glad i asked, thanks for the info |
A typical heat lasts 3 weeks. But I'd keep them seperated for a little longer as I've had a tie happened at 21 days. |

:rolleyes:I would have liked to have had one puppy out of her. She is so sweet and spoiled rotten. But she won't let another dog near her. Maybe I will get her fixed this time. You're right I can't make them do it:) She's might be too tiny. She only weighs maybe 4lbs. |

I know you're probably right. I do love her and I wouldn't want anything to happen to her. My male is also 4 lbs and I just thought it would be ok.:animal-pa |
