birth size vs grown size How much correlation is there between birth size and the grown dog? Max weighed 3 1/2 oz and is less than 3" long. His brother and sister are 3 1/2" and weighed about 4 1/2 oz at birth. Mom Lexy weighs 5#. She only had one puppy the first time. He was almost 6 oz and a full 3 1/2" long. Grown, he weighs about 6# and is taller than mom. As an only, I don't know how representative he is of size. He was FAT when he was born and grew VERY fast. But, he got all the mother's nutrition. The two litters have different sires but both weigh only about 4#. Thanks, Jeanne |
IMHO Birth size usually has little bearing gaging adult weight size...some are are born early, some are born late some are born big some are born as runts (which the runts can catch up in the litters sometimes) |
Really only the breeder who is intimately familiar with her lines can tell you whether a puppy's birth weight will be indicative of it's adult weight. More often than not, it is, although there are the situations where the "runt" or the smaller ones of a litter will "catch up". I have four yorkies under 4 lbs and they were all small at birth. A breeder who has been breeding for many years and knows her lines and which dogs "throw" smaller or larger puppies can usually tell with a great deal of certainty what her puppies will weigh as adults. There is definitely a pateren that develops from certain dogs. |
I have no idea if you can tell by their weight at a certain age, but someone told me that it can be anywhere in the range of the parents. Heidi's daddy was 3 pounds and her mommy was about 8 pounds, and she's leveled off at about 6 1/2 pounds. |
If there is a litter of 6 pups or a litter of 2 pups how can the birth weight be accurate when gaging adult weight??? Birth weight can not predict the adult weight!! Knowing your lines and repeat breeding may allow a breeder a more educated guess, even then there is no guarantees. Best way to cite an example "Ch Mansmor Smoozer" (he is ten years old, he has sired many many litters) average pup from all sired litters 5lbs last litter 4 pups May 2005 average birth weight 4 oz (this breeding has been repeated 4 times "same Sire and Dam" ) 2 boys 2 girls born both girls will be under 5 lbs one boy will be only 4 lbs and one boy may reach 8lbs! Nothing is etched in stone! |
Thanks for the info. Guess I'll just have to wait around and see what my little guy does? :) Jeanne |
