Puppy Shots I am looking into giving the puppies their puppy shots when the time comes. They are 5 weeks and I know I shouldn't start to give them until they are 9weeks....someone told me that I need to buy a parvo shot and puppy shots. I was looking at the shots and found a 5 in 1 with the parvo in it....is this good or what do you suggest? Thanks for your help! |
i use the five way with Corona but the regular five way is fine and is what most people use I think. no need to inject the babies with two different shots. |
I use the 5 way for all my dogs. I make sure to use one shot that includes parvo...I have not used the one with corona .... I have never had a problem. IMO shots is a easy task to at home. I always have my dogs checked out once a year and if they are pups 2x per year. Also IMO the vets office is a good place for a pup that is not protected to get some awful illness! |
You should start at 6 weeks not 9 with a Parvo only shot. |
I give mine a 6 week parvo shot then I give them 8 week, 12 week and 16 week 5-way vaccines. This works well for us and it is what my vet has always recommended. |
Here is a very good website that talks about the different vaccinations and their recommendations: K9 guidelines I use a holistic vet and he recommends not starting vaccinations before 9 or 10 weeks. He actually prefers to wait until the pups are 12 weeks but everyones situation is different. You cannot follow the same vaccination protocol for a Yorkie puppy as you would for a large breed puppy that may be outside and at more risk of exposure to parvo. Also most large breed dogs are weaned at an earlier age and therefore they would need the vaccinations sooner. My puppies are usually not totally weaned until they are 8 or 9 weeks old so they are still getting immunizations from their mom. Giving a 6 week old puppy a shot could actually make them more vulnerable to getting parvo. I do not start vaccinations on my pups until that are around 10 weeks old or older depending on their size. My advise is to do your research and do not over vaccinate. Mine just get distemper and parvo only. There is a wide range of opinions on this subject so you will ultimately have to make a decision that is right for your situation. |
Thanks Ya'll are all greatly appreciated. Thanks for the help!!:aimeeyork |
