oh what to do
 

We have a 9 month old yorkie/poo and a 6 month old yorkie. our 9 month went into heat 3 weeks ago and we first noticed her being accepting to our male on the 11th of aug we were very careful at first with them because we didnt want her to get pregnant on her first heat. so we always had our male wearing his belly band and would take them out to do their business at different times. after a few days of watching our male "try" desperately to even get his paws mounted on our female and being very unsuccessful because of his lack of height we became a little more free with the dogs being together. we never saw them get even close to tying but now it is all said and done my females teats are starting to get bigger and develope a sack above her nipples but it seems that some days its bigger than others and she is now constantly wanting a belly rub. also she is licking herself all the time too. the hair on her belly hasnt really thinned out too much and she hasnt been sick at all. she is still very energetic and playful maybe even more than she was before. our male was trying from the 11th which was a monday until that next monday then just stopped. during the time of him trying he would try for like 2 minutes and then just quit for the day like he knew he wasnt going to be big enough then the next day he would try for a minute and then just quit again all day. are there any sure signs that i can look for? i mean we want to breed them because my siblings love them and would like to have one of their own but we werent wanting to this time. is there anything i can do at home to test and find out? also i have read that at bout 30 days the embryos are like the size of a walnut is that the same with a 8lb yorkie/poo that would have mated with a 4 lb yorkie? lots of questions anything will help. thanks

No, there is nothing that you can do to test at home. She may be expecting, she may not. If your male was as determined as you say, a belly band alone would not stop him. At 9 months, your girl is just a puppy herself. In all honesty, I would have her spayed ASAP, for more reasons than one.

It is very common for a female to show signs of pregnancy after having a heat cycle even if they were not bred. Since the male is just 6 months old there is a good chance your female is having a false pregnancy. By the time she is 6 weeks also you should be able to tell more. Let's just pray she is not pregnant.

her nipples are not getting any bigger they seem to be going back down but then my next question would be how long after a heat would her volva stay swollen? its not huge swollen but it definatly is bigger than it was before. i dont think she is pregnat but i would like to know what to look for to really determin that beacuse if she is i want to make sure we are doing the right things. but if not then i wont have to worry about it. either way im calling the vet today. thanks again

You sound way un-experienced to be dealing with something like this. I think it'd be in the best interest of your dogs to have them spayed and neutered. Wanting to breed them because your siblings love them isn't a good reason IMO. ;)

i wont lie we are unexperienced but i also believe that it is ridiculous to pay thousands for a dog so we are planning to do a service for our loved ones who want a small breed dog that cant afford one so spaying is out of the question now. and i would refuse to abort a pregnancy because those pups deserve life just as much as any of us. i really dont think there is anyone on here that can provide any info that would be much use but then again there might be someone. i truly do not think she is prego but if she is any tips would be great.

If they can't afford the initial payment for just the dog then it's a possibility they wouldn't be able to afford the vet bills especially if something happens. In my opinion, that isn't a really valid excuse as to why you want to breed them. They could simply go to a shelter and adopt one if they're looking for a "cheaper" pet. I think it's sad that you're un-experienced but still wanting to breed them but whatever, people will do what they want to do, that's why there's already such a huge pet population especially of homeless pets.

i have looked at shelters and they still charge upwords of 1000 per pup which i think if they are asking that much to save ones life that is just wrong. also i dont know what kind of vet bills you are stuck with but for the both of our dogs we have paid all of 37 dollars to keep them up to date on shots and had fox tail seeds removed from their ears. also pain killers for a bummed knee. so really vet bills arent much at all. its funny that so many people are against breeding dogs because you could save a dogs life but when people are asking for info because their dog is pregnant those same people suggest to take away the life of the pups... kinda hypocritical dont ya think? either way it is like you said people will do what they want. and we didnt want her to get pregnant this heat or the next one or probably the next one but it maybe did and such is life. thanks for the comments and concerns

I find that hard to believe. Most shelters only charge what the cost of s/n would be, maybe a little more if there were medical costs incurred with the dog while in their care, but certainly not thousands to adopt from a shelter.

Awww...don't feel that way. All you have to do is ask (which you did). There are lots of people here who will give you advice on what they feel is best for your girl, as has already been done. Now whether or not you take that advice is up to you. Accidents happen, no one is blaming you. But in all honesty, someone who is inexperienced in breeding and a puppy that is potentially carrying a litter is NOT a good scenario. Sometimes what is best for the dog, which is what you claim to want for her, is not always the easiest decision or the path you want to take. But you already sound like you have your mind made up, so like you said, I'm not sure how much 'help' you are going to get here.

Good lord if someone wants to breed their pets once they are old enough and they are seeking help and mentoring in doing so, who cares if they are mixed breeds? No one has said thats what it is, but you know it is. If she has responsible homes for them and can make sure they are cared for, give it a rest. There are people that breed "quality" dogs that place them irresponsibly and they end up in shelters.
I am so sick of the holier than thou crap when it comes to the breeders forum.

And all breeders start out inexperienced. You don't just wake up one day and you are an experienced breeder. Do you suggest someone have their pets spayed unless they have experience? How do they then get experience? Oh yeah, by experiencing. There are many complications that can come up in any birth, with any dog, but all in all, breeding and birthing dogs is not rocket science.

Actually, I think the concern is more the fact that the dog is only 9 months old, less to do with what kind of dog it is at this point.:rolleyes: No one once mentioned anything about the dogs being 'mixed' or purebred...until now.;)

I would suggest to ANYONE with a 9 month old, possibly prego puppy to have it spayed, regardless of their experience. True, not everyone starts out with experience, but there is a difference between going into something blind and gaining experience under the watchful eye of a seasoned breeder after doing ample research on the process first.

I also don't see how this is possible. I've never seen a dog at a shelter that had an adoption fee of $1,000 unless said dog had certain medical procedures performed.

I'm, personally, not "stuck" with any vet bills. People on here have been/are though and it's definitely something that could still possibly happen in your or whoever's dog's future. My point was that if they can't afford the initial price then how are they going to afford it if something were to happen whether it be an accident or something that is passed from the parents. Things DO happen which you should already see since you think your dog is pregnant.

Anyway, I'm not trying to be mean, I'm just trying to advise you as you DID come on here and post in a public forum your situation. Let me add, a public forum where mostly everyone is strongly opinionated on the betterment and safety of the breed and animals in general.
