From the breeder standpoint, why is there such a variation of adoption pricing from $600 up to $3000 each puppy for what seems to be the same, AKC Champion lines, etc? If you do not want to show the dog, why would anyone purchase one that was in the thousands? I am just trying to educate myself and understand the difference. Thanks

The main reason people show is to prove that your dog is worth breeding. If you are going to breed - you need to know the standard and make sure your dog is as close to the standard as possible. As well as testing to be completed, etc... I take it very serious when I bring a pup into the world and know that I am totally responsible for it. So both the dam and the sire better be good representation of the breed. This cost, since usually the parents of that dog should be good representation of the breed, will be around 2500 and up. Any sub standard qualities will get passed on.

Thank you for the response. With that reply, then that means anything under $2500 could not to be standard and since there is no way I could afford to pay $2500, I guess I will have to save up for a long time.

to OP. Be careful, even paying $2500 you may not get pups bred to the standard, just tinies with baby dolls faces. I've seen them advertised for up to $5000 b/c they are so small. If wanting to breed, you will need your $2500 +/- for quality bloodlines. If a pet, I'm certain you can find a pet for $1500 that has been bred to the standard.

Thank you. I do not want to show or breed. How do you know then? There are soooo many ads online! Are there any red flags to look for? Thanks for all your help! $1k-$1300 would probably be max even at that its a lot of money. I know though it is an investment since she would be in our family and life for many years to come.... ; )

Look for a show breeder who has a good reputation and a quality line. You are more likely to get a pup that will conform to the breeds standards from someone who is trying to breed their next show dog than from someone who is just breeding their pet for fun or money. You'd be surprised, sometimes the higher quality pups even cost less.

Your best bet is to do your research and do your homework and go to shows. This is where you will learn of what a yorkie is suppose to look like. Yes, you might see some in shows that are closer to the standard than others, but much better than trying to look on line or in the paper. Since you do not want to breed - you could fine a nice pet for about 1500. Have you checked out the ytca.org for a list of breeders near you or research around your area. Most people that will sell a nice pet have the parents tested to make sure they are sound, most show to prove their dogs, and all have guarantees to protect you and the breeder. Expect a good breeder to ask you a lot of questions - remember they are trying to find the best life long home for their pups where they will be loved and cared for. Sometimes breeders will have a beautiful yorkie pup, but may not have the attitude for the ring - then it is usually sold as a pet. Also - expect spay/neuter strict contracts or the pup spayed/neutered before leaving the breeder.
Yes, some unreputable breeders will try and sell their smaller dogs for more money. Sad but true. Ask the breeder a lot of questions too - if reputable, they do not mind. Yes, it is a lifetime commitment, so you want to make sure which ever one you get it is healthy, happy, and will make a good fit for you and your family.
