day63!!!help Felicity is 63 days and temp has been at 100 for about a week now. no diggin and still active and eating. Felicity was 4.5 lbs pre-preg to a 3.8 male. She is expecting 2 pups, had xray on day 57. How accurate are xrays??? Getting affraid that the pups will get to large for her to get out! This is our first litter and hers. Please dont put me down for breeding with no prior experience. We all have to start somewhere. so im nervously awaiting. I have friends that are vets and they say let mom do everything and assist when needed and breeder friend says to assist and cut cord no matter what cause she can bite it too close..any opionions are more that welcome. I would love to hear experiences and also suggestions on whelping. i have done LOTS of reading and have the couple of friends but the more i know the more confortable i feel.. so any feedback is appreciated. melissa NJ and FL in winter |
I would definatley assist. When the pup comes out, open the sak around the face first and mom will be licking...make sure she isn't getting at the cord while you suction the mouth FIRST, then the nostrils. Then I always take my thumbnail and sever the cord that way. That simulates the mother chewing and I never have them bleed. I do this a good inch from the pup. Take her temp 3 times a day. Some dogs don't follow the "book" and don't even have a temp drop, so just watch her. How many times did she tie? She may not have taken on her first tie so she may really not be on day 63. |
thank you i would agree with you and feel more comfortable with your suggestion on assistance. i would hate to lose one from not. Congrats on your new litter yesterday!!! |
thank you she tied 4 times. every other day from 7/3 |

Hi and welcome! How exciting...your upcoming 1st litter! You are right, we all do have to start out as novices; no reason to put anyone down. I am right there with you with only one litter so far at my house. We won't be having another for about a year, so I'll probably be a "novice" all over again by that time. LOL I read anything and everything I could get my hands on about breeding, mating, and whelping yorkie litters, and somewhere in all of that I thankfully found Yorkie Talk too.:D I agree whole-heartedly to be hands on in assisting with the whelping. With my one litter (so far) I was right there by Lexie's side the entire time....got the sack of each pups face and I held the umbilical cord between my fingers until I was able to sever it myself. I was very paranoid about her chewing it too close to have her do it herself. Even after the pup was free, I watched carefully whenever mom would lick the pup near that area to be sure she didn't chew it anymore. I will be watching this thread closely for any news on your impending whelping debut. If there is anything I can do to help, just let me know. Good luck! |
felicity still nothing is happening!! how many days did your females go . We are day 64. Do you wear gloves when you assist??? does is matter? melissa |
Don't get caught up in the numbers... You begin to scare yourself into doubt and your female can read your anxiety as well.... Puppies are not born "63" days after breeding.... puppies are born 63 (+ or -) days from the date of ovulation. That means the day it was released as an egg. No matter what day your puppies are born on... it is the 63rd day. That said, 63 days is a good place to start your calculations since you know when you had a "tie" and when the Heat Cycle began.... As you mentioned, she will give you signs... her temp will drop, she will "nest" and may resist food when whelping is imminent.... Be in contact with your veterinarian... Even most novice females know exactly what to do.... rely on her instinct and watch her closely.... She'll let you know what is happening... If you find that you are still in doubt call your vet...sometimes the stupid questions are the ones that make the difference between uncomplicated whelpings and nightmares..... |
felicity thank you so much for your reply. happy to hear that. was getting nervous that the pups were getting too large for her. thanks again melissa |

How is everything going??? I forgot to answer that question...I do not wear gloves. I sever the cord with my nails , so gloves would just get in the way. I use my bare ole hands :) |
day 65 She's still a happy girl! temp still at 100 and no real sign. THe only thing that's happening is that her tummy get stiff like a prep contraction and i can see he it get lumpy. They move around alot too! so excited!!! How accurate are xrays? took them last friday and it said 2 and sometimes i think i see three moving... is this possible? |
