What is too big to breed?? Gracie weights 9 or 10 lbs. Is that too large to breed if her parents weight less? I've have been doing a lot of reading here and have not seen this question addressed. This is aside from everything else such at conformation, age, testing etc. And...along this line. I have seen people suggest researching the pups pedigree. I can get all of the info on her parents but how do you get info on the yorkies in her pedigree beyond that? I have not found a way to find it on the AKC's website? |
The fact she weighs 9 or 10 pounds tells you....her ancestors were larger than standard. Confirmation includes size.....which is under 7 pounds. If she is AKC registered you can research her pedigree on line for $15. |
Responsible breeders only breed dogs who are as close to the standard as possible. Since your girl is several pounds over, she should be enjoyed as a pet and not bred. |
Please get your girl spayed. She is much too big for breeding and wouldn't produce quality, up-to-standard puppies. Enjoy her as a companion without fear of her having an unwanted litter or getting ovarian cancer. |
Since your girl is well over the upper limit of 7 lbs I would just enjoy her as a pet. The public, rightly or wrongly, wants a smaller Yorkie on average. Those that are within the standard and being bred are producing plenty of larger Yorkies to meet the demand. The likelihood of having puppies that are difficult to place is high when you are breeding larger than standard. |

However, I agree--a female should be minimum 5 pounds to breed, with the max size maybe a bit over 7 lbs depending on various factors. Also, pelvic structure, not just weight should be considered as well. |
