Have the breeder's out there experienced this??
 

I have a question to any breeder's who post on this site....Schatzie my 8 month old has recently been diagnosed with Legges Perthes Disease. I informed my breeder of this and she had never heard of such disease before.

I have a close friend who is an experienced breeder and in all her years of breeding so far she has only had one pup diagnosed with the disease.

I am just curious if other breeder's out there are familiar with this disease and deal with it as commonly as let's say "Luxating Patella". I do know this is a small breed issue.

My vet confirmed that this is also a hereditary disease yet I see breeder contracts out there that suggest no such guarantee over joint problems.

Please understand, I am not taking recourse in any matter towards my breeder. I am only trying to find out all I can about this disease and see if this is wide spread around the states. The two breeder's I mentioned above live in Oklahoma. We are keeping our Schatzie and having surgery done on her and she will be fine. But I know if I can learn all I can now about this disease it might help in future Yorkie pups down the road (many many years hopefully down the road) that I plan on buying. I was mainly just curious on the dealings that other breeder's might have had with all this. Thanks!!

I bought a yorkie book and saw the disease on the list of diseases common among the breed. Otherwise, I've seen one or two references on the internet on yorkie pages, but I don't remember where.

I don't breed [yet] but I just wanted to let you know it took a lot of research to happen across it while I was looking into purchasing my yorkie.

I was actually thinking about going with the one from pryor. But now I am waiting on this lady in Howe, Ok to see if her female is preg.

LP is a genetic problem. Any breeder who has not heard of it has not picked up a book to learn what they should know before breeding a litter of pups. I have been fortunate and never had it show up..but I have had other problems, we all do if we breed long enough..that is why a reputable breeder gives a one year genetic guarantee. They do not ask for the puppy to be returned, they refund the vet fees up to the price of the puppy. If your vet bill is $1000 and you paid $1200, the breeder should refund $1000 to you. This is a common practice among reputable breeders.
LP needs surgery, it can cause a great deal of pain in the leg muscles..the muscle tends to shorten or aptrophy and the leg looks shorter, dog limps...easy to correct, but not always a cheap fix.
I am hard on breeders...you have no right to breed another litter until you make right what went wrong with the last one. We have a great deal of responsiblity to the pet owner...these diseases can bring alot of heartache, vet expenses to the owner and pain to the Yorkie..Best wishes.

Hi there! I own a couple of pugs. One came from a reputable local breeder and the other was from a woman who was moving and needed to place her 2 year old. The dog was bred by Sandy Simons of Bittercreek Kennels and I have searched far and wide for her. Finally found her name on a list of puppy mills. http://www.prisonersofgreed.org/lista02.pdf which basically says that she sells to pet stores or brokers (the woman bought this dog from a pet store).

This is the only other thread that I've found with her name and you say that you contacted her, which means she must also sell to the general public. I'm wondering, do you have her contact information such as phone number or email address?

The dog I have has some really strong points such as conformation body and head and really nice color. The only weak points she has are slight allergies and obvious over-breeding (not near as intelligent as the other dogs, etc.)

I would like to contact her to find out more about the parents and what types of allergy problems they have had. I'd appreciate any info you have! Thanks!

Thanks Pat, took the words right outta my mouth, or rather off my typing fingers. Any yorkie breeder not knowing about LCP is either lying or ignorant. This is covered in my contract and if it ever showed up in my lines, I would be making serious changes in my breeding program.

You guys ^^ are so right. also took the words off my fingers too...lol

a breeder who would have never heard of this defect has not researched their breed. all i can say is that i will pray that the other dogs at her kennel are tested and that the pair that produced this paticular yorkie in the discussion is never bred again. hopefully this breeder will do his or her research now and speak to their vet before they continue with their program.

My 11 mo old female was diagnosed with this just today. She is scheduled for surgery on Monday. My vet also said it was genetic. I had never heard of this before but started researching and found some info. My vet assures me my baby will be fine after the procedure. I hate to admit I purchased her from someone that I later found out was not a reputable breeder. She was suppose to be under 3 lbs and today weighed 4 lbs 3 oz. Was also told the breeder has a history of selling Yorkies with genetic problems. So, I have learned my lesson and will take care of any medical issues that come up. She may be bigger than what I wanted, but she is adorable. Last month I lost my 16 1/2 yr old Cassie and now to have medical problems with my new baby is very upsetting.

I have had first hand experience with LP both dogs I bought from different breeders. Both dogs were bought for the show ring and at 10 months of age or so they started limping. They both had the surgery , the recouping time is a bit long, about three months but now they are close to nomal. The surgery cost by my special vet and friend was 500.00 for each but most vets charge a lot more. The dogs stayed here until they were better and then they were placed into pet homes, and yes the boys were both neutered. In my talking to many vets and reading, this can also be caused by injury, falling out of a play pen , some even believe it can be caused by the mother steping on them. But for me as a breeder when I was trying so hard to get started and being very careful I still ended up with two dogs with this problem. What are the odds of that??? It is a terrible thing to have to go through and I hope I never see it again.

Thanks for the info. I contacted the breeder to let her know my puppy had this problem and her comment was "I didn't sell you a breeder". I cannot believe her attitude but as I said I found out too late that she was not a reputable breeder. Yorkies are such precisous creatures. I am a little nervous about the surgery and what taking care of her afterwards will entail but will do everything I can to help her through this. I thought about becoming a breeder at one time but was too afraid I would want to keep every puppy.:) God bless all of you that do this and really care about your furbabies. :aimeeyork

It has nothing to do with breeding her or not...you wanted a sound and healthy pet...I HATE BREEDERS..and I am one...LOL
Surgery will correct the problem and she will be good as new..!

PS..I might add I bought a bitch and she turned out to have LP..the breeder returned my money and allowed me to keep the dog...I placed her with my vet tech free of charge..she had the surgery done. ..this is the way a reputable breeder handles these problems...

I totally agree, even I know about these genetic issues....and I am relatively new to Yorkies....Your breeder was very "ethical" and handled the issue appropriately.....

What concerns me is the Vet had never heard of these two genetic issues? Maybe a Vet that is versed in the small breed would be a better choice.......no offense......I just expect the Vet to know most everything....maybe I am putting them to high upon that pedestal......LOL

Maybe I am cross-eyed today but it was her breeder that didn't know anything or felt she had no responsibility because she didn't sell her a breeding dog and her vet diagnoised the LP in the dog. LP is very painful for any dog (pet or breeding) and if people are breeding dogs with this disease then they should be :( I will leave it at that. Now some dogs do develope this on their own from to much jumping so I have to be a little careful but a good breeder is well aware of this problem.

That is correct, my vet diagnosed the LP.

The breeder stated quote, 'IF' your vets said these things, they are terribly misinformed. According to the 3rd edition of the illnesses of small canine breeds by Dr. Morgan page 813, which is the book that All vets use in their practice for medical info and updates, there is no known cause or implications of this disease. prior to the diagnosis. My vet is quite surprised that any vet could be so misinformed on this disorder with all the info that is so readily available. Every thing is genetic!! from their hair color, eyes, personality, disposition, size, length, even their life span will be depentant on their genetic code...DNA, an yet you still think I should be respondsable. Unquote.

As far as what my vet said, all I had told her was my vet said it was a genetic disorder and suggested surgery. I did however, let her know that I had been approached by someone after I purchased the puppy and told to "look out for genetic problems, she has been know to sell puppies with genetic disorders". This I'm sure is why she became so defensive. :confused: Maybe I shouldn't have, but I was quite angry at the time. I did not ask her to pay for the surgery or reimburse me in anyway. I told her I would see to it my puppy received the medical attention she needed. I sent her an explanation of LP from a website because as a breeder I would think she would want as much information as possible to ensure her future litters are healthy. Doesn't appear it was appreciated. So I dropped contact with her and moving on. Pray for my baby in the morning. 8am Central time, she goes in. Sorry for the long post.

I am sure everything is going to be fine, and I wish you all the luck with her recovery. It sounds like your vet is very wise, he will take good care of her.

Your puppy will be so happy after healing that there is no more pain. I am sorry that you and your little one are going through this. I am sure that the breeder is quite familiar with genetic disorders, and playing dumb. SHAME! I feel that she should do the right thing and reimburse to you the vet expense. This type of breeder should be put out of business and serve some jail time.

Yes, I think she will be much happier after it is all over with. She has been on pain medication since Friday evening and is running and playing more than she has in weeks. We had no clue she was in pain until she stopped using her hind leg. When she started walking on 3 legs we knew something was wrong although she gave no indication of being in pain other than not using the leg. At first we thought she must have something in her paw but when nothing was found I called the vet immediately. It is truely a shame that everyone that breeds Yorkies does not appreciate what wonderful dogs they are. I would never have any other breed. Thank you all for your support. I am new to this website or any message board for that matter and appreciate your support very much.

Thought I'd let everyone know that the surgery was done this morning and she is home and doing very well. :D Much better than I had expected. Her leg joint was completely out of the socket due to the growth but vet says it cleaned up very well. Vet says she should be putting some weight on the leg within a week. She goes back in 10 days to have the stitches removed and start therapy. Going to need a haircut to match her hip but she is fine. Wanting to play with our other Yorkie but can't let her tonight. So happy to report good news.

I am so happy to hear that all went well with her surgery and that she is home doing well. Before you know it, she will be having fun and you can rest easy that she is not in pain. Hugs to the brave little girl.:D

Well the hard part is over now and it is going to take some time for the muscles to rebuild the joint again. I am so glad everything went well. Bless her sweet hart!!!
