Age at which a puppy can go to new home What is the minimum age you would send a puppy off to their new home? Is 8 weeks too young? I am looking for a puppy and I have noticed some people selling them at this age. I wouldn't want to take him/her away from the mother too soon. Thanks! |
yes... for a yorkie, in MY opinion 8 weeks is too young- they are FAR too tiny at 8 weeks. My breeder wouldn't let Layla go home until she was either 2 lbs or 12 weeks- she came home weighing 1.9 lbs at 12 weeks. i would wait. They need the socialization of their litter mates. |
IMO 10 to 12 weeks of age and no sooner unless they are considerably bigger puppies and then only as early as 9 weeks old. I also hold onto smaller ones abit longer then 12 weeks old. |
Our puppies do not leave here until they are at least 12 weeks and must weigh at least 2 lbs. This is for the puppy's sake and the buyers! Most of our puppies go home between 12-16 weeks old and rarely do they have any trouble making the transistion and they never have trouble bonding with their new families from the start! Here is a good page to read also that addresses some FAQ that you can come across when looking for a yorkie. Yorkshire Terrier Club of America (Awards) |
I think 12 weeks is the norm. It give's the pup time to become independent of it's mom, and socialize with his brothers and sisters. |
Thanks all! |
