Question about Breeding After approval from our vet we have decided to breed our 3 year old yorkie (purebreed and papered) with our year old yorkie male (also purebreed and papered). She is currently in her second week of heat and they have been going at it like crazy, they have bred and gotten stuck together at least 10 times and still seem to be going strong. We are slightly concerned because we were under the impression that this would only occur once or maybe twice. Is it okay to continue to let them breed so often? Is this normal? Any information you have is appreciated! Thanks so much. |

Her fertile time can last an average of 7-9 days. Keep in mind, this is an AVERAGE. Hope this helps! |
They are just animals and will breed until he is exhausted and she is sore. It's your job as the breeder to control the breeding and protect them. They need to be separated and being bred 2 to 4 days is more than enough. It sounds like you've got some homework to do before her due date. I would get to reading, this is a great place to start. |
Thank you for the information. Do you have any suggestions other than this site of books and/or websites where we can fully educate ourselves on what to expect and how to best care for her and her pups? My husband and I are both well educated however, this will be our first experience with puppies and we want to learn all that we can. Thanks so much. |
I can't offer any advice because I only know enough to be dangerous. But I did want to wish you luck and blessings throughout. |

As a breeder, it is up to you to limit the number of ties. Most breeders only allow 3-4 ties over a 3-4 day period. Anything beyond that could be damaging to both of them. |

Also, it is a good idea to hold them during the tie so that the female doesn't try and pull away and hurt both of them. It would be good to read about things like how to deliver pups, how to take care of newborns, what medical care they will need like vaccines (most vets overvaccinate)... How much do they weigh? Were they tested before breeding (bile acid, blood panel, maybe urinalysis, maybe LP and hips)? Happy breeding.:) |
