Breeding two litters in a row Just wondering if you have ever heard of breeding a female two heats in a row and then give her two heat cycles off? |
breeding There are many ways to breed a female..I go by the female herself and no hard fast rules. Yorkie clubs code calls for no more then two in a row...but with a female who comes into season once a year, it would not matter..she is never bred more then once per year anyway. Many breed twice and skip..depends on bitch size, litter size, problems before or after...breeding a female who had 6 or 7 pups twice in a row is very different then a bitch who had one or two. A rest of one season is all that is necessary for a healthy girl. Not always good to wait too long between breedings..better to spay then bred every 2 years or so. I believe in using the uterus or taking it out..no inbetweens..makes me nervous about infection (pyrometra) I have no problems with doubling up..then a rest. |
That's very interesting. I have seen people talk badly about some breeders because of breeding twice in a row. But I had thought I read that some people do this, and then give a long break. And that it is ok. I was just curious, thank you for clearing this up for me. |
I understand what you are saying about bad-mouthing breeders. I'm with Pat on this one. If a bitch is healthy, go ahead and breed her twice and then give her a break for a season. I do not agree with a breeder in my town that has bred one of her bitches for 7 years straight without ever giving her a break. She wanted to trade me for a female and I told her NO knowing what kind of life that my little one would have. |
breeding Most show breeders and reputable hobby breeders do not talk bad about this..it is a common practice. More problems can come with waiting too long to breed. The uterus is a muscle and skipping too many heats can work against the breeder also. Pyrometra is a danger after every heat. I do not think a bitch should be worn out, you know that..but a healthy girl can be bred with regularity, often but not too often. I know reputable breeders who breed three times in a row...I did that with a female who had one and two pups every 10 months..she was spayed after the third time. In fact I used a champion for each breeding and the breeders recommmended it. That is conservative breeding IMO. |
I was actually talking about non breeders saying this. Thank you so much for the info. |
Breeding two litters in a row Regarding breeding two litters in a row - it is not a problem; of course unless the bitch is having other health issues. The bitch usually weans her offspring at 5 - 6 weeks and soon after the pups are separated from her. Depending on the frequency of her heat cycles, she then has the rest of the time to regain her energy and health. Thanks, njgiger |
