6 week shots? I have a 6 week old female who has not had any vet work. As some of you know my baby was sick and I did not want to cause any needless stress. Her Mom is clean on her fecal, HW etc etc and UTD on shots. So, the baby is 20oz now. My vet only gives a 7 in 1. Should I go ahead with the 6 week shots? She seems very healthy and the vet has looked her over 3 times now. She is slow to eat. I hand feed her 2x's per day. I offer dry with a little milk replacer on it also, canned fixed into a soup with MR. She just seems so young and small, just learning to walk and play. She seems much more like a "baby" than my other puppies have. This is the only time I have had a singleton so that may be why she seems younger to me. Anyhow, what do you recommend on the shots? any tips for getting her more interested in puppy food than Mama? |
First, let me say I am not a breeder. However, the newer vaccinations recommendations state that vaccinating a pup before 12 weeks of age is completely ineffective as they still have immunity from mom. If it were me, I would wait till then. The regimen for puppy shots now is just 3 rounds total. |
If she's not eating well on her own I would hold off a little longer on the shots. Keeping her well fed and hydrated is the most important thing at this stage. I do my own shots but I use a 5 way. I wouldn't want to wait later than 8 weeks to start unless she's still not strong enough. |
I agree with Jodie. Most puppies hold their mothers immunity until about 12 weeks. We do our puppies anywhere between 10-12 weeks. We also like to wait until they reach about 2# before their first set of vaccines. I do not recommend the 7 way vaccine either. If your vet does not have the 5 way I would find someone who does. |

I start my puppies vaccinations at 8 weeks and use the 5 way. Starting at 6 weeks is too young due to the baby still having immunity from Mom. The corona vaccine is unnecessary and the lepto has caused many adverse reactions in Yorkies. Also, its effectiveness and need are questionable, especially for a puppy in a low-risk environment. I agree that you should use a different vet if yours is insistent on the protocol you described. |
shots I start later now then in years passed..nevr before 8 and usually the first at 9 or 10 depending on weight. IF it is an tiny I give 1/2 shots two weeks a part. BUT I keep them home until full vaccinated. Good Luck |
Thank you all so much. The vet says it is just fine but I didn't quite believe that. I have not found a vet here that does the 5 way but I will keep checking. I wonder why the vet stresses to have the shots done at 6 weeks? I know they are excessive with wormer... this is my first time going against what the vet says. I just want whats best for my babies. |
