Ivermectrin I have heard recently from a breeder that she uses Ivermectrin-the kind that you use with cattle and horses (liquid)-for her breeding stock??? Does this sound right??? |
Over the years I have met several breeders that use it for heart worm preventative. Here is an article I found on the internet that explains how one person uses it. CANINE HEARTWORMS AND INEXPENSIVE PREVENTION There are many products on the market that are made for horses or fish (antibiotics) that can be safely used on dogs if you know the proper dosages. I would really have to research the product before I would try it on any of my dogs. |
Does anyone out there know more on this???? I had heard of the fish thing too but I can't remember what it is? Where can I get some more info on this? |
Heartgard also contains Ivermectin...it's right on the box. |

This was the liquid form. It is injectable. |
Yes you can use it on the adult dogs but I would not use it on puppies. The dosage is very small like 1/10th cc per 5lbs so it is very easy to draw up more then you need. Also this is not to be used on Collies or Shelties. |
Do you put it on them or inject or oral??? Do you know what the fish stuff is??? |
|
You will want to get the oral stuff only. |

The Ivermectin used is the liquid injectable form but it will be given orally and not injected. You do not use the white paste Ivermectin that is used for worming horses. If you call Revival Animal or one of the other online vet/pet sites that sells the fish antibiotics, see if they can send you a printout/conversion sheet that gives you mixing directions and dosage for dogs and cats. |
Best just to ask your vet and follow his advice. You are going to get too many answers here and going to be confused. My vet sold me the oral wormer and told me 1/10th cc per 5 lbs and not more. 1/10 is a very tiny amount and you do not dilute it at all. So just please ask your vet. Better safe then sorry. |
Is it only good for heartworm? |
ivomectin this is good for all worms except tapeworm, I use fish tapes for tapeworm. Revial pet supplies will give you conversions only if you purchase from them but they are very well priced. I breed Yorkies and have for years now and have not had a problem |
