Is this normal after whelping Okay so im not sure if this is natural or not after whelping, but is it? Peyton has been feeding her puppies and cleaning them and everything. Tomorrow they will be a week old. My question is, is it normal for her to want to leave her babies when they are sleeping? We left the gate off her whelping area to let her come in and out and she will get out and go upstairs to sleep by the fireplace. Is this normal after ONE week? |

Yes , its normal . Mine does that . She come back to the pups when they start crying . |
Perfectly normal. Some want to leave pups sooner while others, later. Just make sure that she is going to check on them and feeding them every couple of hours. Mommas need breaks, too. |
Yes, she does go back and checks on them on her own and when they cry she checks on them as well! I thought it was just wanted to make sure....also when will they wean the pups? |
Mine usually start around 4 weeks of age...where moms will spend less time with pups. Then around 5-6 weeks of age, they're growling at pups, though tolerating a feeding every now and then. By the end of 6 weeks, they're nipping at the pups. Some moms will let pups feed up to 8-10 weeks of age and some will try to ween a little earlier...just depends on the bitch. |
Thanks... so when do we introduce puppy food to the pups? |

Lola didnt want anything to do with the puppy for the first few days, then "bam!" her hormones kicked in and she never left his side. Our puppy turns 4 weeks on Monday and Lola has not wanted to feed him many times during the entire day. She just started doing this like 2 days ago .So now I take her out and give her some alone time with our Yorkie and she gets rest and playtime there. I feed the puppy during the day ,ground up puppy kibble mixed with goat milk, canned puppy food or Gerber babyfood Chicken .I bring Lola in the evening and she lets him nurse "sometimes" during the night. So I wake up early and weigh and feed him. The only thing she does now is want to sit next to his bed but does not want to be in his bed. As long as your girl goes back and nurses them, then they should be fine. How many days old are they? I forgot! lol Genie Cookie,Lola,Angel & Lucky |
Yep, perfectly normal. Try to take one and leave with it and see what she does then.;) If she is still checking on them and protective and feeding and cleaning them, then it's nothing to worry about. She's not abandoning them, she's just taking a much needed break. :) |
