Puppy Shots & Other Puppy Questions

Experienced Breeders I'm in need of learning how to give my own Yorkies their shots as well as Puppies. I have other questions also of course :D Your input and wisdom on this matter is dearly loved by me. And any other tips you may have also :)

1. Do you give your own Yorkies their YEARLY Shots?

2. Does these YEARLY shots come with their own needles?

3. a. If the needles DO NOT come with their own shots, what size needle do you use? Do you use different size needles for smaller Yorkies or larger Yorkies?

4. Where do you purchase all your Yorkies Yearly shots at? Please give Web Site Name or link.

5. Where do you give your adult Yorkie their shots at on their body? (I've seen this done by the Vet and my Father, but want to know if you do your shots the same as theirs)

6. Is their shots hard to give to them?

7. Do you give your Yorkie Puppies their Puppy Shots?

8. At what age do you start your Puppies on their Puppy shots?

9. At what ages do they receive the rest of their Puppy Shots to complete the Series of Puppy Shots?

10. What Name Brand shots do you use for Puppies?

11. Does these puppy shots come with their own needles?

11. (a.) If the needles DO NOT come with their own shots, what size needle do you use? Do you use different size needles for smaller Puppies or larger Puppies?

12. Where do you purchase all your shots for your Puppies at? Please give Web Site Name or link.

13. Where do you give your Puppies their shots at on their body? (I've seen this done by the Vet and my Father, but want to know if you do your shots the same as theirs)

14. Is their shots hard to give to them?

15. Has any of your Puppies or Adult Yorkies ever had a reaction to the shots?

15. (a.) If yes how did you know your Yorkie was having a reaction to the shots you gave them?

15. (b.) If yes, how did you handle this?

15. (c.) Did you take your Yorkie to the Vet after this reaction?

16. Do you give your own 1st Wormer to your Puppies?

16. (a.) At what age do you give your Puppies their 1st Wormer?

16. (b.) If yes what is the Name Brand of the Wormer you give them?

16. (c.) Where do you purchase your Wormer at? Please give Web Site Name or link.

16. (d.) How often after your Puppies 1st Wormer do you give them more? (If you do)

16. (e.) If you give more is it the same Wormer as their 1st Wormer?

16. (f.) If NO what is the Name Brand of the Wormer you give them after their 1st wormer?

16. (g.) How often do you give this 2nd Wormer?

16. (h.) Where do you purchase your 2nd Wormer at? Please give Web Site Name or link.

16. (I.) How often do you give this 2nd Wormer?

17. Have you ever had any side effects from these Wormers?

17. a. If yes, what are the side effects?

17. b. If yes, did you have to take your Puppy/Adult to the Vet?

18. Do you do your own Microchipping?

19. What are the Pros and Cons of doing your own Microchipping?

20. Where do you purchase your Microchipping at? Please give Web Site Name or link.

21. Is it hard to Microchip Yorkies (Adults and Puppies?)?

22. Where do you insert the Microchip at in your Puppy and Adult?

23. Have you ever had any side effects from doing your own Microchipping?

23. (a.) If yes, what was the side effects?

23. (b.) Did you have to take them to the Vet?

Our NEW Vet gave galahads' yearly shots on on side of like his shoulder blade and then his rabies shot on the other side. I had never seen this done. It seems to work okay for him as he didn't wimper or cry and had no effects of the shots.

I won't be doing tail docking or dew claw removal...Don't think I can. lol...Want to learn how to give the shots 1st. My father gives his beagles their shots in the back of their neck...Should I try to have him come down and show me how to give them? Thanks and Hugs :) Lee

No one here in YT Land as Breeders gives their own shots or does their own microchipping??? I would like to learn more about this and I'm sure there are others out here in YT Land that would love to learn about it too. Can some of you please let us know about these questions. :) Lee

I microchipped my puppies , never had side effects .

yorkiekist 07-31-2008 12:51 PM

I give my own shots and do my own worming.I get my products from Revival. They are more than helpful with any of your questions about the products. For a wormer, I like Nemex, but they have a cheaper version of the same thing. The shots do not come with needles so I buy a box of them too. I use the size for puppies and kittens and a louer-lock needle. I give my puppies 3 sets of shots and a yearly booster. I give my adults a booster about every 4 years. This year I will micro-chip the dogs. I have never done it before, but it doesnt look too hard. I am using the AVID chips.

Shots are REALLY EASY to give!! Just pick up the skin on the back of the neck and put the needle under the skin and give the shot. I have only had one puppy have a reaction and I gave it a shot epineferin immediately. The pup bounced back right away. I have never had a probem with Nemex. I would contact Revival. They are so helpful and Ihave never had a problem with them. By the way, tails and dews are really easy to do also.LOL

I have never had a puppy have a reaction but I worry that it might happen someday. What is epineferin and where do you get it? Is it something you always keep on hand? How was your puppy acting when he had the reaction. Thanks for your input. I get my shots from Revival also. Which ones to you order. I just give the Intervet Distemper and Parvo puppy vaccination. Also, at what age do you give the first vaccination?

Woogie Man 07-31-2008 06:59 PM

I order from Revival too and use the DA2PPV. I've never had one have a reaction to a vaccination. I start at 8 weeks for the first vaccination. I use Nemex 2 for a dewormer and start that at 6 weeks. One caution about giving the shots. Have someone hold the pup securely and maintain a shallow angle with the needle. You don't want to get near the spine with the tip. I pick up the skin into a tent and aim the needle between my fingers holding the skin up. Also, make sure there's no air pocket in the syringe before you give the shot.

Hemostats are great for tails: clamp and twist. No blood or infection or stitches. Nail clippers are good for dews. But, my friend has such strong finger nails that she can do a great job of removing dews with her nails. There is only a minute amount of blood, if any, and the results turn out wonderful.

This was a loooooooong time ago and I got the epineferin(I know I spelled that wrong) at a feed store. The puppy, within minutes of the shot, got listless and drooly and the gums went white. I thought she was going to die right then. I gave her a shot, about 1cc, and she perked right up. I usually have some in the fridge, just in case. I get it from my vet. I have never had another puppy do that again. I get the shots made by Phizer and I cant remember the name off the top of my head, but it does not have lepto. I usually give the first shot at 6 weeks.

Lynn is there a size on the needles for puppies and kittens??? I would like the smallest safest size for puppies. Do you know the name brand of them? Have you micro-chipped any of your dogs yet? Hugs, Lee

6. Is their shots hard to give to them?

gardenyorkies 08-25-2008 07:59 PM

1. Do you give your own Yorkies their YEARLY Shots?

****Nope I don't give shots anymore, I take them to the vet to do...FYI the drug companies that manufacture the vaccines do not stand behind their vaccines if you acquire a vaccine from anyone other than a vet...They do not because they can not be sure that the vaccines were handled correctly..If someone at a warehouse does not keep the vaccines at the proper temperature then the vaccine is no good...If a vet gives the vaccine and your puppy has a reaction to the vaccine or dies the drug company will pay the any medical bills that the puppy may incur...

We also feel it is important that our vet has the opportunity to vet check our puppies/adults at that time

So you don't give booster shots either nor any puppy shots. What age do you start your puppies on their shots? I'm leaning toward 10 weeks old. Do you do any wormer yourself on your puppies or do you let the Vet do all this?

We started Tiffanies Litters at the Vets @ 3 days old, for dew claws & tail docking & vet checked then also had Tiffanie checked to make sure she was producing milk as she should, 6 weeks Vet check and 1st puppy shots and 1st wormer, 8 weeks 2nd puppy shots and vet check also. 3rd set at 12 weeks would be last shots and rabies here....

So if we went with starting shots @ 10 weeks old then 12 weeks old then 16 weeks old and shots would be complete here where we live, including rabies. With their last set of shots would last them 3 years? And I would do the 3 year rabies with my own Yorkies... This is so hard to know what is right for your Yorkies...Puppies or adults as far as shots and wormers.

Our new Vet called me this morning, I went ahead and asked when they start their puppies on puppy shots.

They said this is when they give shots: 1st set @ 6 weeks old, 2nd set @ 9 weeks old, 3rd set @ 12 weeks old & 16 @ weeks old is their 1st adult and rabies in 2 different shots.

So now knowing our new Vet starts their shots at 6 weeks old and has a series of 4...Then if we choose to go with starting 1st set of puppies shots @ 10 weeks, 2nd set @ 13 weeks old, 3rd set @ 16 weeks old & 19 @ weeks old is their 1st adult and rabies in 2 different shots.

gardenyorkies 08-26-2008 10:10 AM

We don't do any vaccines on any of our dogs ourselves...I used to do them and I had a puppy that I had to have euthanized because of a vaccine reaction at 12 weeks old...She was a perfect puppy who had nothing wrong with her...We had a necropsy done to determine the cause of death...When the drug company was questioned they would not guarantee the vaccines because they do not sell the vaccines to Revival (at least that is what the drug company told us)...Revival gets the vaccines from another party...So many change of hands that we decided that the best way was to let our vet do the vaccines...

We start vaccines somewhere between 8 & 10 weeks old...We space vaccines out by three weeks so 8, 11 & 14 weeks at the earliest...If a puppy is very small we would wait longer...We worm puppies twice with Panacur once before the first vaccine and 3 weeks after that...We do NOT do both at the same time...I feel it is too hard on their systems, after all you are injecting part of the disease you are vaccinating for into your pup and then the body has to fight it off to develop an immunity...

Rabies vaccines we wait until closer to a year old...We like to see them more mature and better able to handle the vaccine (since it is a high incidence of reaction drug)...

Everyone has to make a educated decision and go from there...This is just what is working for us'!

I came across this old thread while researching to see if what my puppy is experiencing are side effects from his shot.

He is 9 weeks old, had his first shot on Monday Dec 29 and he has vbeen very lethargic and not eating ever since. He was perfectly heathy when I took him for the shot.

I was unable to take him back to the vet on Tuesday, when he still wasn't feeling well, because I was delivering a litter of puppies. I was going to take him in yesterday, but they closed early due to New Years Eve, nd of course they are closed today.

I periodically give him droppers of water with Karo syrup in it to keep him from becoming dehydrated.

JeanieK 01-01-2009 11:03 AM

I split this into two posts because it deals with separate issues.

The next question is, why do so many of you subject your puppies to deworming? Do your dogs have worms? How would a puppy get worms if your other dogs do not have worms? If your dogs don't have worms then why deworm the puppies and if they do have worms, shouldn't you have addressed that issue prior to breeding?

It amazes me how many people routinely give poison to their puppies for no reason what so ever.

bjh 01-01-2009 11:22 AM

I am so sorry your puppy is not feeling well. Do you know what shots your puppy got? How big is the puppy? Vaccinations can cause serious side effects on some puppies. If the puppy is not eating well you might try some baby food chicken and vegetables like squash, green bean, peas, sweet potatoes, etc. Also be sure to give a little Nutri-cal or karo syrup and water. A little pedialyte might be helpful too.

I do not automatically worm my puppies. None of mine have tested positive for worms in years. I think that is because mine stay strictly indoors. I do give mine Albon if they start getting icky poops. My vet recommend not worming puppies unless they test positive for worms.

Good luck with your baby, please keep us posted.

I asked a similar question on another forum only it had to do with heartworm medicine. I am thinking of not vaccinating my older dogs (8,10,11) this year and wanted to know about a more natural source of heartworm meds. my dogs do go outside, we do treat the lawn with a natural pesticide and it seems to work, we don't have many mesquitoes but i want to treat my dogs with a natural source to protect them even more. I would like to start them now so it can be in their systems before the weather changes. I have read a couple things about useing natural herbs for heartworm preventive and am thinking of going that route. I use sentinal right now which works for the flea, whipworm, hookworm ect. so i know i will have to do fecal test to watch for these things and can do the titer testing, they do have the 3yr rabies which some say the 1yr & the 3yr are the same. I do not worm my puppies because we have never had worms but i have fecals done on them and start them on heartworm before they leave my home. I hate pumping all these things into my dogs every year/month, does anyone have any natural remedies that they would like to share. Thanks in advance
