Need some help with a diet! It has been a while since I have posted anything on YT. But low and behold, I'm back and need some input. My Lilly is down right heavy and I am trying to put her on a diet and I'm failing.. I almost think she is gaining weight rather then losing it. My dogs have always ate Purina One, I know some of you would shutter with the thought of feeding your dogs Purina, but I have found it to be a decent dog food with a great price to match. Anyway, My other two dogs (Bell and Petey) are picky eaters so I have been mixing in a little canned food with theirs, I also gave a little to Lilly but not as much. I give each dog 1/2 cup of food (now it is the weight control one) and 1/3 of a 1/4 of a can. Lilly has not lost anything. HELP! What do you suggest. Am I feeding her to much? Not enough? Maybe I should try a different food, Please any input would be great! Thanks;) |
Well, any dog that's feels 'heavy' probably is eating too much for their size and activity level. There's a feeding guideline on the bag you can refer to but it's only a guide. Dogs with a lower activity level need less than an active dog. Purina isn't a great food and that may be part of the problem. It's full of fillers so dogs tend to eat more of it because they're never really as satisfied as they would be with a more nutrient dense food. Better food can be more economical than the cheaper brands because you'll feed less of it to your dog. Check dogfoodanalysis.com and compare the recommended amount to feed with your brand and some premium brands. There's a review section there that reviews most every brand out there; it's very informative. Also, remember that you have to count any treats as part of their intake. Lots of treats are high in fat so that can be part of the problem. Seems also that you may be giving a lot of canned with the dry. I've started feeding Canadia and it seems to work as long as I stick to the recommended amount given for their weight. If I see they are gaining I decrease alittle. Donna Bird Brooklynn's Yorkshire Terriers |
Thanks for your insight, I will look at dogfoodanalysis.com. As far as the canned, I am only giving her a little bit. (1/3 of 1/4 of a can, it is just about 2 maybe 3 tablespoons) but she will eat it without the wet, so I'm going to stop giving it to her. Thanks again. (I have never had a dog that needed to be on a diet) |
diet If all else fails, cut back on the dry and add string beans into the dry. I had a bitch that needed to lose some weight, that worked out fine. |
Going out today to find a new weight control dry food. Can I ask, what do you feed your females and how much. (Oh what do they weigh?) |
feeding Its hard to say how much they eat, they eat together. If I have one that I want to lose weight on, that one will eat seperately, and I would feed 1/3 cup of food. I feed Natures Variety and I also feed Royal Canin. I belong to the breeders club for RC so I am able to get it at a very good price and have it drop shipped to me door. |
Food HI :) I have all mine on Life's Abundance. I have been VERY pleased with the results too and is sooo good for them! Another plus is they all LOVE it :thumbup: All my babies will be weaned on it and sent home with it too. Its an All Life's Stages food.
