Question on South American Breeders Hello. I just joined the list and have already learned a lot from all of you, which will be very helpful when I'm ready to get my own Yorkie. A friend of ours decided to buy a Yorkie for her daughter and came to me for basic puppy advice. After congratulating her, I asked where she was getting it from. She told me the puppy was coming from a breeder in Columbia because she understands they're very strict about breeders there. When I asked her if she ever had a dog before, she said no. Red flags came up really fast for me. Does anyone have any experience with breeders in South America? Can it really be true the government regulates the puppy sales much more than the US? Internet searches haven't given me any information. I'm trying not to frighten her but I'm worried for her family and the little puppy. Thanks for your help. Zoe |
I know people who have purchased yorkie puppies from other countries. Brazil and Hungray come to mind. That being said...there are bad breeders in every country I think. |
When we lived in Jersey, we had customers that said they sell yorkies real cheap in South America....Sad ! I don't think the living conditions are so great for people in SA countries, can you imagine the animals? |
south american breeders I have a friend in south america who handles dogs, and does some breeding. Money is tight there and pups don't sell for much. That is probably why you can buy one cheaper there than from here. Just beware, that is a LONG time for a pup to be in cargo on an airplane. A direct flights is many hours, more than I'd fly as a passenger and these pups are in cargo, if they have a connection or have to refuel, that is awful for them, they are babies. Not to mention they can get lost or stolen..their is a lot of theft in south america. My friend actually came home from a long weekend from showing and found her window air conditioners were gone..can u imagine?? Stealing your a/c units? They can't buy things like we can here. Electronics are very expensive and they charge a lot to get them into the country. I sent her a show jacket, the jacket was $30 and the customs was $60. Certainly not worth it..and a lot of corruption too. |
Hi,I am from Latin America so I know all the reputable yorkie breeders. The only reputable yorkie breeder in Colombia is Ledia Lucia Perez and her mother, she is even a judge if you happen to receive the Yorkshire Terrier Magazine you can see her with Lorraine Hayes (Patoral) her lines come from Parkside.I would really investigate. |

We also have very good yorkies with excellent lines in my case I have a dog who wone several times AKC's BIS,and also own several AKC Ch.. Of course if you buy from a Souyh American puppy mill thats another story. |
pups Maria...your post is most informative and helpful to this person. And..common sense tells me there wonderful places to live in just about every country in the world..just depends on your money situation as in the USA ...the scam that gets me is the Cambodian breeders..I would never believe there are reputable Yorkie breeders there...I guess it is because I am old enough to remember Viet Nam... |
Maria, I didn't mean to offend anyone, I just know that the people in the US especially, pamper their animals so much , sometimes better than humans (except maybe puppymills, etc) Places like SA , Europe and the US have areas and people who will do anything to make money (the root of all evil sometimes) and many times it's survival, I understand that...Can you imagine the message that we Americans have sent out to the world? Make it cute, make it for our kids , our pets and make it cheap and the Americans will buy it !!! We lost so many jobs to other countries, yet we still buy products make in " ". Now, it's cute, cheap animals!!! That just breeds more puppymills, whether in the US or elsewhere..... |
Thanks for your comments I'm also concerned my friend doesn't realize what such a long flight (or even a short one) can affect a small puppy. My primary question was to understand if the breeding were as strictly controlled as my friend is being led to believe. (We all know there are good and bad everywhere.) She's never had a dog and when I asked her some basic questions, she realized she didn't "do her homework" just ordered a puppy for her child. I'm afraid the person she was referred to is a backyard breeder. At any rate, I'll be there to support her and help out as best I can. Hopefully everything will turn out well. I've learned much more about this breed from all of you. This list is great. |
