Ok I was changing Maddie's diaper tonight and for some odd reason I decided to look at her stuff down there and it looks like its a lil swollen like maybe she is possibly going into heat :eek: :confused: Oh dear God I hope not!!! Bailey hasn't been acting any differently around her and he hasn't been trying to hump her........I took a picture of it.....

Maddie is expected to go into heat towards the end of this month or sometime next...

I don't want an unwanted pregnancy so I'm kind glad if this is a sign I am catching it before Bailey turns into a MAD man....

What do you guys think it is???? Is she about to go into heat???? PLEASE HELP ME!!

I would definitely keep them separated until you know for sure. I have heard of dogs going into heat and their owners not knowing it until it was too late.

Could she have an infection or irritation? How old is she? One of my furgirls got a little vaginal infection as a puppy-around 7-9 months old (?), and the doctor just said to watch it, that it was likely due to hormones and nothing to worry about.

Yes it could possibly be an infection or irritation because I keep diapers on her but I change them often but that could possible be.......Maddie is 3 years old.

Maybe like a diaper rash? or maybe she is just "sensitive" down there...I would definitely call your vet in the AM, or now if you think it's severe or urgent. I can't really tell from the picture, so it's best to err on the side of caution if you think she needs a vet ASAP. Let me know what you decide to do, and what your vet says. Hugs to you and Maddie!

When my little girl went into heat before her scheduled spay, it looked just like that for a while before the bleeding started.

It looks a little puffy. It is kinda hard to see in the picture with all of the hair. Are you getting her spayed or do you plan on breeding her?:)

She is most likely in heat. They will often come in heat a few weeks to a month early. Destiny's last heat cycle she came in heat a month before she normally does.
I would definately keep a close eye on her. If she is in heat, the bleeding should start in a few days.

Oh and I would like to add, my boys don't get excited until they girls near their second week of their heat cycle. This could be the same with Bailey.

I am so new to this board and please do not get offended but I about fell out of my chair when I realized that you were talking about your yorkie and diaper changing. Now I know I have to get me one of these babies. And get my kids to change diapers, lol

If her vulva is a bit swollen, then I'd say yes, she has started her heat cycle. You can still have her spayed, but if that's not an option for you then I would take turns with the two dogs in the crate. One out, one in and so on. I wouldn't take any chances at all.

Dogs have been known to escape from crates or breed through them...I would use a double door system, making sure that there are 2 closed doors between them at all times to prevent any accidents.
