My girl appetite drop after mating her.. is it normal?? Just to recap the whole story, my girl weight at 4lb, and she is 4yrs this year, and through out the year with me she is not very good with her diet where i need to force her and make sure she eats her kibbles everyday (4cups per day) that all comes alright till i mated her with my male on her 9th, 11th, and 13th day of her heat cycle. Today is her 8th day from the 1st day i mated her, and i realise her appetite is dropping tremendously, thou i still follow the same routine, where in the morning and evening i will sit beside her and watch her eat( thats the only way she will eat where i have to sit beside her!) and nows she is taking less than 2 cups per day.... and this make me anxious cuz it seriously make me worry whether is she pregnant or not??? if yes she is not having enough nutrition.... and i have been browsing through the internet doing some research for nutritional food for her, but it seems like i have to cook for her, and it's not a problem for me to cook for her but if i starts to give her home cook food than my girl will starts picking with her food and she expect me to give her variety everyday...that has happen back when she was 2 yrs old where she will go on strike without food for 2 weeks or more if the food i cook she doesn't like it.... so it ended up i need to send her back to my breeder and train her taking back her own kibbles, gosh.... this girl has her way to make her mummy worry till death... trust me.. she would know her mummy will do anything to please her and beg her to eat..... and i'm feeding her with solid gold kibble mix with solid gold sea meal and it's flaxee oil.... it's the whole set of the kibble nutrition........ is this normal if yorkies are expecting?? |
I think a lot of yorkies are picky eaters, but I have to question 4 cups a day?? Even my biggest yorkie does not eat even 2 cups a day. That is whole lot of food! |
Wow....your post is kind of confusing. First off, 4 pounds is too small to be breeding a Yorkie. Also, what size cup are you measuring with? A dog that size should be eating less than 1 cup per day. At 4 cups per day, all you're doing is creating a poop machine. Has this girl ever been bred before? If not, her uterus has lost elasticity and could make for a problem pregnancy no matter what her size. To answer your question, I have never had any of my girls show an appetite difference 8 days from a mating...it usually comes later. I could only advise spaying that baby and ending the pregnancy if she is pregnant before it gets too far along. From your post, it sounds like the only responsible thing to do. |
I have to agree with everything that's been said. She's too small & too old to be having a first litter. I've never had one go off eating after mating. That usually only happens when whelping is imminant. |
sorry for the misleading, my cups comes in a very small size, u know those small tester cups, 4 small cups is equivalent to 1 full cup. yeah she was bred before when i bought her at the age of 1 1/2 by her former owner, i beg him to sell her to me as they intend to breed her on her next heat. after having her and now she is 4 and she had a better life with me and i really wanted to keep her line and for sure i am not going to give away her babies, and also will spay her when she had her c-section later. I dont plan to let her to go through natural birth thou they say it's alright to let her have it that way, i'm going to have it through c-section and in the same time spay her... all i wanted is her babies. And reason to have her babies rather than getting a new yorky is also because she wont get along with new comers easily, even when i bought my male a year n half ago, she didn't take it easily, she went on strike with me and just deserted herself from me, not letting me to go near her, even by now i am not allowed to carry my male in front of her else she will bark at me furiously.... :( she very possesive... I know she is small... so i really taking full pre cautious everything she needed before and after... no matter is she pregnant or not i always make sure she given the priority... btw... i thought standard yorkies should not exceed 7lb?? so what is the right size for a female yorky to breed? |

A Yorkie female should be at least 5 pounds before considering breeding but that is not all to consider. There are many recent threads here concerning this and you should read them. Also, spaying at the same time as having a c-section may not always be the best decision but your vet is the one to tell you that. I would never recommend someone breeding a female that small to begin with. It's a very risky proposition not only for the dam but the pups too. It sounds like from your post that you aren't experienced at all with this. It isn't something to be done without a lot of research which it doesn't sound like you've done. Any pregnancy has its risks and not just at whelping time. Having a 4 pound Yorkie getting pregnant has many extra risks so, for the sake of your girl, I would still say the best thing would be to have her spayed now. |
This is only my opinion... .I do not think it is right just to breed a Yorkie for the sake of keeping her babies. Many have already said she is too small, and i am thinking that you want a tiny yorkie .:aimeeyork This is not in the best interest of your dog, or the Yorkie breed . 4lbs is very tiny for an adult female. Breeding and prenancy is very difficult on a little dog. :aimeeyork I personally do not feel it is the right thing to do . your jepardizing the health of your female Yorkie, and stressing her out and her body. |
I'm certainly no expert but it sounds to me like you are trying very hard to do things right and it's not my place to tell you if what you are doing is right or wrong. Maybe call and ask your vet for advice. |

anyhow i do appreciate all of the advised given and will follow up closely with my vet. all i want is to have her to have nurtured with full nutrition and i thought if i were to post here maybe i might a alternative to make her gain more weight..... Btw to get a standard breed in malaysia is a slim chance, and i also have tried to import from eupore countries but guess what.... they will just offer a sky high price which end up RM40K++ i've tried negotiating with them but no luck they stand firm with the price..... |
:aimeeyork Best of luck to you .Sorry if I seemed rude, however, i am worried that she is too small for breeding and their can be potentiel problems and risks to the mom and babies. :aimeeyork |
When my female was bred, she also lost her appetite a week or so after mating. I believe it was due to morning sickness which lasted a week or so, then her appetite came back....with a vengence. She will likely eat alot more is she is indeed pregnant. Good Luck and watch her carefully since she is so small. |
