2 Very useful MUST HAVES After the Whelp Well when we took Lola and her puppy to their first vet visit I took them in their whelp box with a huge towel over the basket. I was afraid to take them because I didnt have anything to keep the box warm for thepuppy. I had a home made warming pad that you can microwave and take with you and it worked great !I know you can use bottles filled with hot water but their so lumpy! #1 Homemade heating pad All you need is a 1 1/2 Cup of UNcooked rice and a 6"X8" velvet rectangle shaped fabric. Sew the fabric all the way around and leave a little opening to pour the Uncooked rice into, then stitch the rest up. the thicker the fabric the slower it releases the heat. I have used this rice pad for over a year! I microwaved it for 45-60 seconds and wrapped it in a washcloth and put it underneath two fleece blankets in the whelp basket. It kept one side of the whelp box nice and warm for the Vet appt.It was about 2 hrs total and it was still warm enough. So if you need a portable heating pad for a short trip this is a must have! #2 Cabbage leaves for engorged teats, breasts. When early signs of Mastitis appear. My vet suggested this for Lola and it has worked WONDERS on reducing the swelling. I googled it and found that you tear one cabbage leaf ,cut it in half . Roll a rolling pin across it until some of the cabbage veins crush slightly. Apply to the engorged breasts and cover it with a cloth. Hold it in place for about 10-15 minutes.I did this 3 times a day.Her teats near her vulva was extremely swollen that they looked like two HUGE testicles dragging. I do express a little bit of milk since only one pup is nursing. I didnt believe the cabbage leaves would work so well but I did exactly as the vet told me to and I saw a difference after 3 applications in one day.Apply the cabbage leaves cool from the fridge. Thank you for sharing that information. That is very interesting about the cabbage leaves. I will have to try that next time I have a bitch with hard, swollen tits. It was nice of your vet to share that with you. |
Thanks for that advise that was really good information. I read about the cabbage leaves from your other post. But the warmer out of rice is really good. I can't wait to make a few and that will be nice to give to some of my breeder friends. That is a really good ideal. |
That's a really crafty idea...I will definitely make a rice pad for Annie Belle's babies. It is a funny thing about the cabbage leaves...my great grandmother made a cabbage concoction for my cousin after her baby was born to help relieve the engorged breasts. I thought it was just an old wives tale, but it worked! I guess it works for dogs too! :) Genie, when were you able to hear the heart beats with a stethoscope and where were you able to pick up their heart beats? Thanks, Tammy |
I take an old tube sock and filled it with the rice and tie a knot at the top, I have used these for year's as well. great info on the cabbage, hope I never have to use it but will be nice to know in case. Thank's |
Tammy I heard the heartbeats at 6 weeks. But I had to take her to my room and mute the tv. She laid very still and I pet her head while I searched abdomen sides. Then all of a sudden I heard a faint super fast thump, thump, thump sound.I quicky put it over her chest to hear Lola's heartbeat and it was so much slower. And you really cant hear your dog's heartbeat all the way down the lowest part of her abdomen. By the 7th week the heartbeats were easy to find and hear. I always heard 1 puppy heartbeat really loud and fastest.I felt it would be a strong pup. The other two were lower sound but still fast .
