Begining my research on Blood lines I am getting ready to research information on my next dam and sire. I wanted to know if any of you would share knowledge with me on different books or websites that I may locate to start my research. I have the AKC standard for the Yorkie, but what I am looking for is what names to look for and resarch... When I began learning about my horse, there were names that the horse lovers would always talk about and say to look for, they could tell you sometimes the specific traits of certain horses... So if anyone can help direct me to books or websites... I would be forever grateful..:thumbs up |
Most better known Yorkies have some info on the web about them. Try googling the names of some dogs (champions) in the pedigree and see if you get anything. You may see photos and info or may see other breeders with some of the same bloodlines with pedigrees posted. Probably your best resource would be an experienced exhibitor. There's also some info on some well known Yorkies in The New Complete Yorkshire Terrier by Joan Gordon. Hope this is a start. :aimeeyork :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :) |
Thank you I appreciate your information. I will try your suggestions.:) |
Many Yorkie breeders will post pedigrees on their web page. When you read a few of these pedigrees you will begin to see common Champions and "line names" that keep showing up. I would love to see a comprehensive collection of the most popular champion pedigrees with a breakdown of dominant characteristics, it would make my research much easier. |
dam and sire You say "next" do you have a dam and sire now? Perhaps that breeder could get you started in the right direction, you should definately go to some shows and speak to breeders and ask about pedigrees and such. The complete yorkie book is a very good one. The ytca.org site has a book called the Heritage, there is a lot of info in there as well. Good luck in your quest! |
Thank you, I hadn't thought about that, today I was reading the AKC past show champions... I ordered two books today... Breeding a show champion and The complete Yorkie... then I googled and found some history lessons and re-read them. Thank you for that idea... |

His daughter has a better head and I looked at her teeth today... I actually think they may have local show potential...so I am pinging tonight... My first litter was pretty nice, except I think mom has a large gene in her family. One of my girls Bentley is 10 pounds... she has the most beautiful coat...but she is way over the limit of the standard... but Spirit and Dad give me a little hope....since I have joined this forum... I am thinking of buying a better dam, because Mom's ears don't seem to match the standard, but her other 3 pups...were so close in the standard and the color is so beautiful... so... I have been rethinking my line... I want to breed as close to the standard as possible... so just doing more research on all the test and every single thing I can... |
