I Need Your Help Breeders? Hi guys, I havent been on in awhile, Glad to be back. I have a question for the breeders, Actually 2 questions. My girl Suki is pregnant and is due at the end of July. SHe has gotten very picky about her food. Her 1st litter she was fine ate everything, drank Esbilac for her calcium, etc.. this time she only will eat fresh broiled chicken breast but not as much as she did last time. I cant get her to drink any esbilac, I have been giving her Nutri-Stat for her vitamins, But I am worried about her not getting enough calcium. Has stool is very loose sometimes runny and is dark like black. I dont know if this is from the nutri-stat, she never ate it before. How can I get her to consume more calcium and should I worry about the stools? Please help! She has about 3 weeks to go and I know she needs more calcium. Any help would be greatly appreciated? |
I give mine cottage cheese and chicken. Also some of my females will eat a tums for calcium like its a treat. I wish you the best! I do this after they have their puppies and not before. Most do not require calcium before whelping. |
You shouldn't give her extra calcium at this time.....only after the pups are born. Right now she needs extra protein if anything. I feed my girls normally except I feed them more the last 3 weeks of pregnancy. Also, I make sure to give them a multi-vitamin every day. |
here's a link with some info Feeding the Pregnant Dog |
I tried to give her the pet-tab multi-vitamin, I have crushed it, desolved it and coated it to try to get her to eat it. She knows and will not touch it. I dont want to try to shove it down her throat, she is going thru enough right now. She wont touch cottage cheese. or any other cheese. I think she is getting tired of the chicken breast, Regular dog food is out of the question, She wont even walk by the bowl, Like I said she is very picky this time. I thought that towards the end of the pregnancy, you are suppose to give them more calcium to prevent hypoglycemia. |
Thanks for the link, I will go there now,. |
Have you taken her temperature? If her stools are loose and black, the black is a sign of blood in the stool. I would see a vet ASAP to make sure the mom and babies are not in danger. The moms usually will only stop eating when they are a day or two ahead of whelping. |
not eating Hi- Sometimes my girls will not eat well, other times they eat me out of house and home. First, I would be concerned with the stool, have the vet check her out. As for eating, they do not need extra calcium before whelping, if you give too much , she won't produce milk on her own, her body will stop producing natural calcium. One thing I was able to get my girl to eat when she was pregnant was a raw diet. I went out and got her raw chicken square, they had lamb, beef, turkey, duck etc. They say on the bag under normal conditions a 5 lb dog only needs 2 squares a day, I doubled it and tripled it. She is still eating them now along with her dry while she is nursing. The squares are loaded with nutrition. If she won't take pet tab, and if you don't want to force it on her, get Pet Tinic from your vet. You can squirt that down. Duncanmom |
