Do Breeders regularly give Albon to their pups I was told by a breeder that many breeders give Albon as a preventative measure against Coccidia. If you are keeping your dogs in your house then why would you feel the need to treat the puppies? If you do then when would you treat them? |
Coccidia can be transfered by a mother who is asymptomatic. Here's a good article: Coccidia (Coccidiosis) in Dogs: A Cause of Diarrhea |
Thank you I had seen that before and didn't think about it. Angel doesn't get in with the puppies any more. I have her out of their x-pen. When I allowed her to get in I put a baby tee shirt on her. She goes on pee pads on the front porch and the puppies are in their pen. Can they get thie parasite from sniffing the mothers behind? They have not been around her elimination area. She does eat and drink their water when she does get in their pen. She has done that from the start when I first started leaving a bowl of water for them. They pups are 7 weeks old now. They have been wormed again recently. I took 5 stool samples into the vet and their is no parasites. |
Most puppies get it after they are born and they come in contact with the mommas stool. For example, if the momma is a carrier of coccidia and she has a outbreak of diarrhea after the puppies are born and she gets a little poop on the hair, then it can be passed to the pups if they lick her hair. Adults can get it from eating or licking bird droppings, mice droppings and cockroaches. I recently discovered that Albon is used for a number of things besides coccidia: Quote:

We do not routinely give Albon, only on a needed basis. We did have one female that seemed to always be a carrier and give it her her puppies. We did treat her puppies once they were older. We have yet to have a puppy leave here with it. |
We give Bycox(it is the same thing)to all our litters at 4 weaks as a preventive we give .2 cc for 2 days. |
