Question about the boys. O.k...I've never had an 'intact' male so it stands to reason that I've never had one living with girls in heat either. I've noticed Murfee's urine has become stronger since the girls have come in heat and has a rather skunk like smell to it. Of course he is marking (thank goodness for belly bands!) which I expected but is he now destined to smell like a skunk for the rest of his life or will this just happen when the girls come in heat again? Yes, frequent bathing and cleaning with wipes does help but when I change his belly band or open the garbage can that has a pad in it...whew! I've even noticed the smell around the front deck so I've been hosing it off quite a lot lately but I'm sure I'll have to use a deck cleaner at some point. |
i never noticed this in my boys im sorry. even when my female was in heat. |
Hi! I have a male also that is not neutuered..and he doesn't have a real bad odor..I just keep him washed everyday in baby shampoo..cause he wears the belly bands also. Everyone does their on thing...this is just what I do Good luck |
I hope he is drinking water--that would cause his urine to become strong smelling. It should pass as soon as the girls' cycles end. Good luck. |
I was going to ask about how well he is drinking. This time of year they can have very concentrated urine because of the heat causing them to become dehydrated. Keep lots of fresh water out where he can get to it at all times. It doesnt take much to dehydrate a little dog. Smelly concentrated urine is a sign that he could be. |
He drinks plenty of water...they have 2 water bottles that are full all the time and SS dishes in their kennels with the doors open during the day so they can get to them too. I've heard of breeders saying their males have a stronger smell to their urine either once the girls come into heat or once they were bred. I wasn't sure which it was so I thought I'd ask...hopefully in another week and a half when their heat cycles are over this will pass too. Thank you. |
urine smell When I have a girl in season, one of my boys in particular has really offensive urine smell, the others don't. I'd say its normal. If he's fine otherwise, wait until she out of season and it should go away, if not I'd have the vet check him possibly for bladder/urinary infection. Also, do you give him plenty of time during the day without his bellyband, so that he can clean up his privates? Bleach the deck, I do mine a couple times a week. |

I'll also bleach the deck just to keep things in check. |
