Whelping area I was just wondering, where do you put a whelping box for your little ones? I just can seen to find the right area. Doo Doo seems to be spending most of the day sleeping under my bed she's due around the 15th of July. Any ideas? |
I fix a plastic box with lots of blankets with a heating pad under them in my closet. My female feels safe in the dark small area and she can come and go as she pleases. Some people us x-pens with a blanket over them in a bedroom corner, where there is not alot of people traffic, so the mama doesn't get stressed out. :) |
I have a pretty big masterbathroom that's 10'X12' ft. My husband and I are the only one that use it and it's pretty quiet in that part of the house .I got a big hamper and cut out one side so she can walk in and out of it,then bought some fleece fabric from walmart and made a cover,no sewing needed.I'm going to put the heating pad underneath that and make sure she has towels ontop.I like the hamper because I can pull the cord of the heating pad through one of the little holes.I also put a baby gate in the bthroom doorway and I can see her from my bed.I really doubt she will make it to her July 12 due date.I keep feeling it will be by July 7th or so.It looks like she has a lot of milk because even when she lies down the milk droplets are oozing out of her teats. She's also been digging in my bed so she is getting ready Genie,Cookie,Lola & Angel |
Doo Doo's milk hasn't came in yet. But last night ( she sleeps in a wire crate in my bed room) I heard lots of noise, so when I checked on her she was digging through her blankets barring her face into them. This morning about 5 a.m. I took her out to do her buisness, as usual she ran out the door down the stairs and relief herself on the grass. Then she turned around went back upstairs and walked right into her crate, there she is with the door wide open and just laying there. I have to work today but I won't be paying much attention as I'll be thinking of her the whole day. I'll be coming home half way through my shift, so I can check on her. Do you think it's wise to just let her use her crate as a whelping area? She seems to be preparing that for it. |
bed Can you put a plastic bin her her crate? Most do not get serious about the bed until the puppies come..some new moms need to have at least one pup to understand that is where you want her to stay..once puppy is there she will stay in the bed most often...bitches are different? Just be sure you can get to the mom and pups easily if she needs help..you can put a bin by her crate and once she starts whelping she can be moved to the bin...do not use too much bedding...a towel works well,,have several on hand to change during whelping.. |
I put it in our masterbath and when it got close to "time" and for a few weeks after her delivery, we would use my daughter's bathroom. It worked ideally--the whelping area was only about 10 feet from my bed, the floor was easy to clean up for 'messes', we could shut the door *almost* completely to give her plenty of privacy even if we had company there were 2 rooms/locked doors between the living room and that bathroom, it was easy to regulate the temp in that room, and she could come nap on our bed when she got ready to leave the pups for small periods of time but still be near them. |
Doo Doo Just had 6 pups. Tinker89144 just messaged me and told me! She had them all on her own! Good job Doo doo |

I use a rubber maid under the bed storage container. This is easy for mama to get in and out, easy for me to help her when needed. What I did was set up a foldable table that had all my supplies on it and the rubber maid container fit right underneath the table. |
birthing bed We made a birthing bed,you start with a pice of wood, making it 36 by 36,we then put a 6x2 nailed to pice of wood for the botton, after all 4 sides are nailed together, then we put a 2 by 1 pice cut to put around the in side 3 inches from the floor. this is so the puppies can get under there and mother will not roll un the puppies.I put heating pad in the box,o ya we drill a hole to put the cord on the out side,i keep the heating pad on low, hope this helps for some one.cath54 |
