curious about YTCA Many places I've seen reference to the YTCA and that buyers should look for breeders who are member of the YTCA. Why is that? Why would a breeder not belong? Are they no good if they don't belong? Do all the good ones belong to it? |
Cartel? As posted in the General Discussion forum, you have to evaluate everything about a breeder. The YTCA people I've met seem to be in a tightly knit group of old timers and not very welcoming of new members. This may vary somewhat by geographic region. Some of us who are not politically or socially inclined choose to concentrate on our dogs instead of jockeying for sponsorship in this club that sees itself as kind of superior. |
I think if you visit their website you will have a good understanding about the club and what they do. Here is a link to their website: Yorkshire Terrier Club of America The YTCA is a small club and it is not easy to become a member. In order to join you have to be referred by two members of the YTCA and they have to have personally visited your home. I believe most members of the YTCA are respectable and most do try to follow the guidelines set forth by the YTCA. Since it is so hard for anyone to join unless you really know someone that is already a member then I feel that we should all strive to follow the guidelines as best we can whether we are members or not. It does not make you a bad breeder if you are not a member. The truth of the matter is that many of the members of the YTCA also show their yorkies and it is not a easy task finding a member that does have puppies for sale and those that do usually have long waiting lists. |
The YTCA is the parent breed club to AKC--in short, they wrote the standard adopted and used, etc. There is a very strict criteria and list of requirements that have to be met in order to become a member. (Visit their site for more info.) There actually used to be a few YTCA members here--4 that I can think of off the top of my head--but they rarely post anymore, which is very unfortunate. :( That is not to say that all YTCA members are perfect (really I can't say, I have not met all of them) or that non-YTCA members/breeders or even non-YTCA referred breeders are bad...it just means they aren't members. |
