Mom Not Eating!!! Ok, so here I am in need of help again. I am truely struggling to get Bridget to eat anything. I have tried all kinds of puppy food, meats that I have cooked, pudding, treats, just litterally anything to get her to eat, and she is just eating a bite or two then she refuses. With the draw from the babies she is losing weight so rapidly that I am at a loss. I try to seperate her to force her to eat, and instead she just lays down. She looks like a skelton, and this has become worse since the death of the baby. She knew he died, tried to move him and seperate him from the others, but seems to be having a hard time. It is like she just wants them to nurse her to death. Does anyone know what I should do? Should I force her to eat, like put stuff in her mouth, even hand feeding is not working. Any help would be great. |
First off have you taken her temperature to make sure she does not have a fever?...Sometimes when they are not feeling well they will go off food but will struggle to take care of their babies...She is trying to be a good mom! Second...Yes, if she does not have a fever go ahead and syringe feed her...I would either use some strained meat baby food with about a cc of nutri-cal added to it...Stir it up and draw it up in a syringe...(you can get one at the pharmacy)...And just slowly feed it to her...She probably won't like you doing it but it is necessary... You can give your vet a call and also ask about getting some canned high caloric food from them to feed...Some breeders have had good luck giving their girls Dyne, which is a high calorie supplement... It just may take a couple of days of force feeding to spur her appetite... My only concern is that her calcium levels may be dropping and they will go off of food, get a fever over 103, lose interest in puppies, pace, stagger...and lose muscle control...So if you are really concerned take her into your vet and have her checked out...They can do a blood test to check her calcium...Better safe than sorry! |
My Quinn did this right after having her babies and I was at my end trying to get her to eat ANYTHING. I was talking to my grandma about it and she said she used to feed her Pom those baby food (Gerber I think) meat sticks. They are stage 3 Organic turkey and chicken in these little sticks that look like canned Vienna Sausages. But they come in a Jar. It worked and once I got her to eat a couple of Jars of those I offered her some cottage cheese. Now I can't get her to stop eating! LOL Good luck! I hope your baby gets to feeling better and starts eating soon. |
