Age to Breed ? Hi everyone, I'm just wanting to know at what age any of you wait to breed your yorkie girls ? We are thinking of breeding our Emma . Thank you |
There are many things to consider other than the age of your girl. I would suggest you look in the breeders' forum, search through some threads there. Breeding Yorkies is a huge responsibility and there are many risks. It is not something that should be done casually and without MUCH research. To answer your question, though, you should never consider breeding a girl until her second heat, at least. :aimeeyork :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :) |

There are many things to learn about than just when are you able to breed. Please consider this long and hard. Here are some suggestions: 1. RESEARCH 2. SERIOUSLY CONSIDER 3. If you are breeding to make money dont, b/c if you do it correctly you will either break even or be in the hole...and its ALOT OF WORK. 4. Check our breeders section and ask them and read posts. |
Why to breed ? |
Here's a great start for your research before deciding to breed: So you want to breed, and your dog passes conformation, temperament, health, genetic testing. First you have to find a compatible / non related Stud, with all the same background testing as your female, i.e. conformation, temperament, health, genetic testing and good non related pedigree. The general goal, when you breed, would be to better the breed. That is the MAIN reason to breed. Breeding IS not as EASY as it looks. Lack of experience can risk the life of your Dam. Having puppies, so your Children can witness the miracle of birth, sometimes takes a twist....... Be Prepared, and ask yourself about how you will handle things, when things go wrong? Is it worth it? Most Whelpings do not follow the text instructions, most whelpings require experience. Also, There is no money in breeding, it is a Hobby and usually costs money to do it right. Many unexpected costs, can break your bank, you need to have funds set aside, in case you have trouble while pregnant and whelping. 25% of births, have a $1000 Vet bill for a middle of the night c-section, Then fading puppies, can cost thousands of dollars to save, your puppies can get many virus' from mild coccidia, Giardia, to a more serious Parvo. Your Dam could have no milk, or too much and get mastitis. Your dam could hemorrhage. This list goes on. Also this will be very helpful to you: To Breed or Not To Breed, Should I breed my dog? Good luck in whatever choice you make about it, but remember to do it responsibly! |

I know there is alot of negatives and true facts about breeding. But its also really great when we have breeders that do this for the enjoyment and for the betterment of our breed. That way we get some wonderful puppies out of the deal. I think there are alot of positive things to think about as well but one needs to be doing this for the right reasons. If you research you will see lots of notes about all kinds of things happening while whelping. |
