Hi! Hi, I'm trying to find out as much info as I can about males and females because I will be bringing home a sister or brother for Jake, and he is not neutered. I'm not a big fan of spaying/neutering, and I really would like to take home the girl puppy! I was wondering how hard it would be to keep them from successfully mating? Or how soon would I need to spay her if I were to bring her home? Thanks!! |
It can be a real pain when you have unaltered dogs together. You would have to keep them completely separated for 3 full weeks and they will be very unhappy, whining and barking. How old is Jake? While I am not a fan of early neutering and spaying I do believe it should be done, especially with females when they are more mature. Having two unneutered males together could definitely cause a problem in some cases. I know it is a hard decision and I wish you the best of luck with whatever decision you make. http://www.naiaonline.org/pdfs/LongT...uterInDogs.pdf |
I just had Brooklyn spayed yesterday. She is six months old and had not had her first heat. I understand that it usually starts at around 6 mos old. (heat that is). I did have Oliver nuetered at about the same age. Good luck :D |
I have a male and a female and I had them spayed and neutered at 6 and 7 mos. There is no way I would want to live with unaltered females and males together unless I was a breeder |

Trying to keep an unaltered female in heat from an unaltered male would be like trying to take a relaxing nap in a heavy metal concert. Everyone concerned would be absolutely misrable during each heat cycle. Since you mentioned having the female spayed and not the male neutered, if you are concerned about not having testicles, you could check into Neuticles - here is the link to their homesite Neuticles.com. A comment directly from their site: Neuticles allows your pet to retain his natural look, self esteem and aids in the trauma associated with neutering. |
Thank you! I think I will go ahead and spay and neuter.. I just wish they wouldn't have to go through that pain.. But I guess it is for the best. |
I had Buttons neutered around 8 months. it calmed him down and he has never sprayed in the house ( thank god). He is the most loving baby (when he feels like it).:D |

I think dogs do have a higher pain tolerence than humans. Your vet can give something for pain though just in case, just ask. Something mild though. T. |
