My son's dog killed her pups?? I am devastated but nowhere near as bad as my son and his OH must feel right now ... Their Old English (sorry, not Yorkie) was expecting ...she had 3 healthy pups but then lost all the others (there were quite a few due) ...one pup was breech presentation and they were inexperienced.... Anyway, my son has just phoned me in tears.....the mother just killed the THREE pups she had.....please, can someone tell me why??? They had to take her for a C Section but these pups were fine.....and the mother was doing well too....does this happen??? I know nothing about breeding but am crying here too.....:( |
I am so sorry. And yes it does happen. My son loves to hunt and back a few years ago his hunting dog had puppies. She killed everyone of them before they realized she had had them. They too were in shock, but I have heard of that happening. Its terrible and I wonder why too but evidently it can happen with any breed. |
I can't tell you why this happened, but I am so very sorry for you and your son. It would be devestating to lose one pup, much less a whole litter! Hugs to you and your son  |
How long after the csection did this happen? Our vet says to watch VERY close for the first day as they are still groggy and may just snap at them...not meaning to really kill them. |
C section was 2 days ago (or maybe 3, not too sure??) ...anyway the mother has now been rushed to the vet as she is losing blood.....it was her first litter too ....devastating isn't it when this happens?? :( |

I have never had this happen with my dogs before, but I did have a hamster kill all of her babies just as they were about to go to new homes. I know, totally different, but its the only time I have witnessed anything like that. People always say to not handle puppies or kittens because the moms may kill them, but I had never seen it actually happen before. |
Sorry, I didn't make myself clear ...it was indeed an OES ...Old English Sheepdog.....a real tragedy as my son said the three they had were lovely strong pups.....:( Thanks for listening everyone. |
Sorry, my bad. I did have a friend that raised OES and Bernese Mt dogs. I believe she told me that she hand raised them quite frequently also. I know her Berners always had to have c-sections. Again, I am sorry for your loss.:( |
I an so sorry for your son that must be devastating. This happened to a friend a while back and I did some research in the book The Complete Book of Dog Breeding there is some info on the matter they say it is called cannibalism. |
How horrible! I am so sorry that this happened. A friend had a bulldog and of course, c-section. That evening (owner had pups in a cage), the mom went in and somehow pulled the female pup through the cage and ate her. There was no evidence of the pup...just blood everywhere. Just tragic! |
Oh how terrible to loose the litter and now the mom loosing blood. I hope she is okay and maybe the next time will go better. I hear alot of times the mom eats the puppies but not sure why. |
I am so sorry to hear about the tragic loss of the OES litter. I have heard of that happening before, but thankfully have not experianced it myself. I wish the best for your son and the mama OES.........is she doing okay now? |
That's so sad !! I'm far from being a breeder or expert but I've read that because of the C-Section sometimes the moms really don't understand they even had puppies - maybe that's what happened ? There's more to it but it does happen ....but OMG that has to be just devestating to know your own dog could do this - or worse - to see.... My condolences to your son and family - that's very sad.. I hope the mom will be ok. It's NATURE and please tell them not to hold this against her. She probably was just very confused after surgery.:(:(:( |
