Maggie's Symptoms - Help? I posted this thread in the Health and Diet forums but no one really knows and someone suggested I post this here so here I am! Okay so lately Maggie has been acting a little strange. I have done a little research and have narrowed it down to a couple of things. First though, I want to tell you her symptoms and let you all tell ME what you think. 1. She has not been eating very much lately. 2. She's been VERY grouchy. She and Franklin have grown to be best buddies and they fight (play) all the time. They were just playing earlier this afternoon and then all of a sudden they got into a huge, gnarly fight. I do understand that this happens every so often with dogs but I thought it was more extreme than their usual spat. She also has either been really cuddly or not at all. Like.. literally ON TOP of us or curled up in a corner on the opposite couch, away from everyone else. 3. She has been humping Franklin during their playtime, something that is completely new. 4. Her diet hasn't changed but her little tummy has gotten bigger.. I can also tell the area around her nipples is swollen. 5. Up until the last week or so, she would just lay on her bed/blankets the way I arranged them for her. I've noticed in the mornings that they are all messed up, meaning she dug and rearranged them a lot throughout the night. My research tells me 3 things: 1. She could be pregnant. However - she absolutely has not become pregnant while in my care and if she IS pregnant, it would've had to have happened before we got her. It's possible considering we've had her just over a month and the typical female dog pregnancy is around 62 days. However, I highly doubt Vicki would've let that happen. 2. She is going through heat? I'm not sure when her last heat was.. I'll have to ask Vicki. 3. She is having a false pregnancy. Any ideas? |
I have a girl now that is displaying many of the behaviors you describe. In the case of my girl, I know that she is approaching her heat cycle though she isn't quite there yet. Since you've had your girl a month, it shouldn't be a false pregnancy as you would have noticed some stage of her heat cycle. If she were actually in heat, you should see some blood and swelling, also she would be cleaning herself a lot. If she were pregnant, it would have happened just before you got her and she probably would have had some morning sickness or pickiness with her food. Mine usually also get a little lazy when they're expecting. My guess is that Maggie is approaching her cycle just as my Bonnie is. :aimeeyork :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :) |
Yikes! It's getting worse! Franklin and Maggie spent all day playing and cuddling and then she finally settled down on my friend's (who's visiting and also has dogs) lap. Well Franklin came in like.. 4 feet of her and LOOKED at her and she started growling like crazy. Lindsey (my friend) had to physically restrain her from attacking Franklin. He didn't do anything to her! He just looked at her. They were playing together not 30 minutes before! I had Andrew pick up Franklin to keep him from provoking her and then we calmed Maggie down. Well 5 minutes later.. same exact thing! We decided it was bed time for Miss Maggie and put her in her crate. We also blocked Franklin off in the living room with us so he wouldn't go bother her. Help? :( |
How old is Maggie? It really sounds to me like she is getting ready to come in heat. Females get very moody during that time. The only other thing that it could be is that Maggie has adjusted to her new home and is starting to challenge Franklin to establish herself as leader of the pack. As for being off her food, mine go through cycles like that. Some days they don't eat much and other days they eat like pigs. Also, if she is coming in eat she might go off her food a little. |
Update and Pictures 2 Attachment(s) Maybe it's because I'm paranoid but I SWEAR her belly gets bigger every day. I took pictures because if she IS pregnant... I need to know ASAP so I can figure out what to do. We also squeezed her nipples and some milk came out. SO.. sometime tell me what's happening! |
bitch If seh is not pregnant, then she is having a false pregnancy...her teats are filled with milk...when mine look like that, they have puppies. |
I recommend you talk to the person you got her from and find out when her last heat was and if should could have possibly been bred. Otherwise, it could be just a false pregnancy. |
You could just take her to the vet to see if she really is expecting. If she has milk that means she is VERY close. They could also do an xray to make sure. One of my girls had a false and went as far as nesting for her babies to come and had a lot of milk also. She protected her nest area for a few days from the other dogs too. I made sure to give her extra attention and go on lots of walks. After a few days she just forgot about her "puppies". |
