Absolute Must-Haves for Whelping I know us first timers are quite anxious and nervous about the big day. As Chloe's due date approaches, I want to make certain that I have the essentials. I have seen lists and lists of things. Can the breeders tell me hands-down the best, most important things to have for whelping? Thank you! The YT breeders are the best! |
- Calsorb and nursemate asap are must haves for us here. You can get them both at revivalanimal.com - Heating pad is another must have - You can never feed a cold puppy. - Whelping box - Bulb syringe - Nutridrops - also can be bought at revival - Karo syrup or honey Those are just a few things to get you started. |
Ok here is my list... We are expecting puppies literally any time now, this is what I have set up... Thermometer covers for them... vaseline Clean washclothes, about 30 wipes, unscented and non alcohol hand sanitizer for me... make sure I am uber clean for helping gloves ky jelly ( this is only because we had one boy stuck in the birth canal last time, and vet spread a little of this around the outside of the vagina, and he popped right out) nasal aspirator unwaxed dental floss 4 hemostats (sterilized) trama sheers ( for clipping the cord, I an sure regular scissors is fine too) heating pad under the box whelping box ( mine is an under the bed box) extra towels and blankets 2 extra people on call to help just in case ( and a baby sitter on call too) whelping pudding made and in the fridge |
Here is a great thread that is just full of wonderful information for first time breeders: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/bre...-research.html |
Okay, again, I am a first time breeder. I live in NJ. Where do you get things such as hemostats and aspirators from? Did you order online or is there a store I can get these from? Also, do you use a normal heating pad and just have a ton of towels on top so that its not too hot? |
The hemostats you can buy at a med supply store. Or if like me you happen to be good friends with a nurse, they can get their hands on them. The nasal aspirator came from walmart in the H&B section where they had the ear drops and such, you can also look at the baby sections in most other stores and find them there too. I use a regular heating pad on low, under the whelping box, with blankets on the bottom to keep mom and babies away from it, this you can also get at any local drug store. I hope this helps you out, i know it is scary the first time, but you should do fine!!! When are your puppies due?? |
Okay, thank you! My aunt is a nurse, Ill have to see if she has any. Chloe is due around July 8th (that would be day 63). She is going to the vet tomorrow for a physical exam and hopefully we will schedule an X-ray for her in about 12 days or so. (Today is day 43 for her). It is an extremely exciting time, yet nerve-wracking too. I have been following your posts about Bridget. She is so big!! Chloe is getting bigger and bigger by the day. In the past few days she really started to look big (but not like Bridget!). I will try to take some pics tonight and post them. Thanks again for the help. I will start looking this weekend for the supplies as I have her area basically set up. |
Genie (Cookie2) has posted some pics of Chloe's pregnant belly for me on the thread for July Puppies. |
Don't forget to add the supplies need if you have a weak pup that won't suck: feeding kit -bottle, esbilac or recipe for the goat's milk formula, feeding tube #8 French, syringes without needle for feeding tube 10cc - 20 cc, corn syrup, lactrate ringers solution, syringes if they get dehydrates, gram scale, and books and information of what to do. T. |
i looked over your list an one thing or 2 that came to mind right off...camera with fresh batteries/film if not digital.....and possibly a video cam with empty tapes.....just a thought |
Best most important thing to have on hand during first whelp: A MENTOR! (And all that other stuff too.) |
Thanks for this great thread.. I need to get stuff from the states that I cannot get in Canada... anne |
I want to add scales to the list. Pen and paper and your vets phone #, I always call my vet when Baby is in labor, just to give them a heads up. I also have a clean cat litter box, I use this to put the pups in while Baby is delivering a pup. I put the heating pad in it with a towel over the heating pad. |
supplies For the actual whelping I have reduced my needs to 5 things, clamp, scissors, washclothes for a good grip if pulling is needed, then cleaning, a few oxyie shots, plastic bed bin with heat... |
Please don't laugh "Whelping Pudding"? What is whelping Pudding? Were you serious or kidding? I want to know if this is something I need in my nursery. |
