to spay or not to spay that is the question?? I am contemplating Getting Gracie spade... I really wanted her to have at least one litter... but I dont want anything bad to happen to her... the vet is really trying to get me to spay her... but Im going back and forth... I dont know what to do... Gracie was 4.4 lbs at her last appointment... that was last month... and she is 6 and 1/2 months now... I just dont know... any advice? thanks so much |
What would your reason be for her having one litter? It is an old wives tale, that they make a better pet after they have had a litter. If it because you want her to "experience motherhood", she certainly wouldn't know the difference. I say, go with your Vet's opinion and get her spayed. Good luck! |
It is a lot of work for one litter!!! Just my personal exp. but if you are only thinking of breeding her once here are somethings to consider. 1. Is she pet quality, or an exceptional showcase of the breed 2. Is it just for the experiance or to let your family experiance the birth? 3. Are you prepared for any outcome? Although done everyday, some dogs die during whelping, or have serious complications? 4. Are you finacially prepared for the added expense of puppies? 5. Are you able to care for the babies if mom does not? 6. WIll you be able to handle the loss of a puppy? 7. Are you ready to have puppies in your house for 3 months? 8. Are you willing to put in the time and effort to find them exceptional homes? I would say if you are doing it just for the experiance, then no, spay her and save yourself and her the heartache of the possible bad endings that can and do happen. |

Very well said...sometimes it better to make a decision on logic verses heartstrings thinking of warm, fuzzy puppies....and the process of whelping...Spaying her makes it 100% foolproof that nothing will happen to her during preg. and whelping;) |
My dad has bred dogs in the years gone way back when...it's not something I would want to do. There is a ton of work involved and the expense was a lot. While I would love to be a grandma there was no way I would risk my baby. I feel it's best to leave the breeding to those that know how to do it right and I can just get another baby when the time is right. Personally I suggest you spay your girl. Why chance losing her. |
Although I'm no breeder, 4.4 lbs seems a little small to be breeding. I would have her spayed. |

Here is a good article that discusses the pros and cons of spaying and neutering. http://www.naiaonline.org/pdfs/LongT...uterInDogs.pdf I recommend any female that is not going to be bred should be spayed but I am not an advocate of early spaying. I think for the health of the female it is better to wait until they are a little more mature. |
If there is no intact male that could get at her, it may be better to wait until she matures a bit more to get her spayed. The other posts have outlined what you should ask yourself before considering breeding. The link bjh posted makes a good case for delaying spaying but if you decide to delay, make sure there isn't an 'oops' breeding. :aimeeyork :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :) |

I think it is definitely a hard decision to make...not because you want them to have a litter. I've heard and read some stories of the smaller females not doing good (and some dying) when being spayed and that's scary as well. |
