Putting weight on thin, nursing girl? my girl just had her pups today, and i noticed about a week ago that she is pretty thin. i don't know if this is normal as this is my first breeding dog and first litter, but i've been trying to put weight on her but i don't know what's the best solution for that  anybody know a great remedy to help a nursing female gain weight? any and all help is very appreciated. thanks everyone :) |
YOu might give her some Nutrical several times per day. I cook things they love to eat also. I even give them Mac and cheese, noodles and chicken with gravy. Also a balanced high quality puppy food like Chicken Soup. I also give cottage cheese. I feed a nursing mom several times per day. |
You might want to try the whelping pudding too. Also, my mommas like the canned Pedigree Lamb and Rice puppy food. |
how much nutrical would i give her in one shot and how many times a day? i've been fedding her some of the beneful packaged foods, and some pedigree pouches. i'll pick up some cottage cheese and some chicken. great advice. thanks :) |
diet You can not overfeed a bitch at this point. I mix puppy dry with hamburger or chicken/rice/cottage..mine eat yoghart and melted vanilla ice cream...good luck |
i don't think i'm over feeding her. i'm feeding her a little bit about 3 times a day so she doesn't have too much in her tummy at one time. |

feeding What I was saying is, a nursing bitch can eat as much as she wants...it is impossible to over feed a nursing bitch....give her as much food as she wants..if she cleans the bowl, give her more... |
I feed my nursing moms 3 times a day... soft packaged food... the dry food is always left out... and of course a "snack" mid-day.... Sometimes I give American cheese at night. Some eat the dry food more than others..... in addition to the soft, wet food. Most new moms look a little "concave". Best of luck!! ;) |
Our girl just whelped her third litter and she previously and now eats 4-5 times a day...She has the whelping pudding 3 times a dayalong with ..I cook chicken or ground beef with rice, carrots and put flax seed in the mix with cottage cheese...She loves ice cream too. SHe tells me when she's hungry..its funny, she will come out of the box, go into the kitchen, spin 2-3 times and bark:rolleyes:I feed her, she pottys and goes back in to nurse...she's predictable!!!! But you might try feeding her a little more often and a little more food, you would be surprised how much they burn nursing. I don't think you could overfeed her. Good luck and congratulations! |
oh wow, that's awesome advice. thanks a million! i mixed her up some plain cooked oatmeal and cooked chicken breast for her before bed, so that it stays with her hopefully all night as oatmeal is very heavy. i also mixed her up some potatoes and chicken and corn, and am giving her about a teaspoon of nutrical per day. i hope what i'm doing will help her out, all your advice has been great. thanks a tonne guys! :D |
If you are up in the night checking on puppies, etc. give her something to eat then too. When in doubt, feed her again. Whatever she will eat. If you are not supplementing her calcium with Pet-Cal or something like it, be sure she gets lots of calcium-rich foods: yogurt, cottage cheese, ice cream. If you don't she can go into a decline very quickly. Best wishes and congrats on your new puppies. |
