Need feeding advise When will be a good time to remove heating pad? When will be a good time to start to introduce puppy food? Lucky is 24 days old today, as soon as he starts eating on his own he will stay at his house and wont need a "baby sitter" anymore :( |
Unless the weather is really hot, I'd leave the heating pad and give him the choice of when to be on it. I don't start solid food until they are about 4 weeks. Then I put puppy kibble in the blender and blend it to a powder. Leave it dry and put it in the pen with a bowl of water too. He will lick it and begin to eat it more as he grows. Giving straight kibble too soon can cause choking, and mixing kibble with liquids is messy and it spoils and needs to be re-made. Blender kibble is really perfect and my puppies love it. |

Feed as you have been and just leave the blender kibble in the pen with him. Eventually he will eat enough to be weaned. Oh, and my moms love it too. |
Thank you both! Any particular dry puppy kibble you recommend? |
I use Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lovers Soul and put it in the blender. That is what I'm doing for mine right now. |
I've always used Royal Canin for Yorkies, Puppies and I even use the Baby Dog Food. I know others have said they have had trouble with it, but I never have. |
:thumbup:I agree the ground Chicken Soup puppy food is the best way to wean. Just let them continue to nurse on mom as long as she is willing. Usually by 8 weeks the pups will not need to nurse on momma anymore. Some might take a little longer depending on the size of the pups. The tiny ones definitely need to nurse as long as possible. Also, I always remove the heating pad when the pups are two weeks old unless it is winter and the floor is really cold. |
