To get the boy nursing, have you tried putting some supplement on the nipple first, or a little karo syrup, or a little of your saliva? He needs to nurse at least a little if he can before supplementing.

I struggled for several days with my little boy and had to feed round the clock. I finally got so I weighed him on a digital scale before and after feeding just to see if there was any difference. If there wasn't I tried to give him a little more...although he frequently refused more food. I also gave him Nutri-Drops every night, and every morning (just one drop) if he hadn't gained weight. Finally, he started gaining every day. Good luck and keep posting.

Oh, I also meant to suggest whelping pudding for your mom to help her with her milk. I gave it after whelping, and for several days after the birth (she had 7 puppies) in between meals and in the middle of the night to help keep her strength up.

There are several versions on YT, but this is the one I used:

1 Large package of Vanilla pie/pudding mix (cook kind)
1/2 Cup sugar
4 Cups milk
4 egg yolks

Cook on low heat stirring constantly untilthick. Give it to your mom at body temp. You can cut the recipe in half as it makes quite a bit.

Well I am going to get a few hours sleep now. I will update everyone tomorrow. But I am determined to get them better and fatten them up!

I stopped giving Angel cottage cheese(she had diarrhea) but I bought lactose free milk and i have been making her the whelping pudding. Angel is feeding 7puppies. I have supplemented from the begining. I have karo syrup, nutrical on hand Igive the pups also. I had tried syringe-bottle I had to make several holes in the bottles. I have to hold Angel down to let the pups nurse now but the pups are 3 weeks old.
Anyway it is work to keep them healthy. Angel eats 3-4 times a day along with eating her kibble. I love Royal Canin puppy- or baby dog food. She was eating the yorkie 28.

Good News, I woke up this morning to find both puppies nursing from their mom. Both gained weight since yesterday. Today I am gonna make Mom some of that whelping pudding.

I am getting so attached to these pups. Their personalities are so different.

You are doing a fantastic job...it is a lot of work and a lot of worry but give yourself a pat on the back! ;)

I'm just seeing this thread, not much puter time, Midwest has been slammed for 3 weeks with tornados and flooding.
Good news! I'm glad to see they are doing better. I just wanted to add that Mom needs lots of fluids to produce milk too. Make sure she is drinking.

Happy to see they are doing better...Sounds like you are on the right track!...If you are still not seeing continuous weight gain then you will need to feed throughout the night also!..Your doing a great job!...Having pups can be a lot of work!

Good idea! Glad that you noticed the weight loss and the whelping pudding is great! I think I had posted on one of your other thread that once you start on the pudding, expect much weight gain...but they need it at this age!

Good job and a pat on the back to you for doing so well in getting your pups to gain weight. You are getting such good advice......some that I have printed out and will be putting in my files in case I need the same information when I have pups next year.
I wish you continued success with your babies and will be checking back in for more updates. You're doing awesome! :)
