Is it possible to be in heat 3 weeks after whelping My angel has had a discharge since whelping her pups. She had retained 2 placentas but passed them both around 10:45 pm in the evening 12 hours after she had her last pup (10:06am on May 20th). I noticed this evening the discharge was bright red in color and only enough to leave a smudge if you were to wipe her and or noted slightly on her hind legs after urinating. I had to the vet last week and she had no fever but she had mastitis. She is drinking plenty of water and still voiding as usual no more and no less, no changes in color of urine yellow. She has not had any further diarrhea. I don't know whether to be worried about this or not. |
There was a thread similar to this a couple weeks ago and some of the breeders here said they've had bitches bleed slightly for a few weeks after whelping. Also, a brownish-red discharge could be a sign of a uterine infection so just watch to see if it stops within the next few weeks and of course keep an eye out for any other symptoms |
As long as the discharge isnt' odorous and there is no fever you should be okay. My Teddi has large pups and she has a bright red discharge from time to time until about the 5th week. Remi's is greenish brown for a couple of weeks and than dissapears. They are like us in that they will have different amounts of discharge during heat and postpartum. Just continue to keep an eye on her, sounds like she's doing well. |
problem If her temp is normal, she is eating well, caring for her pups, alert and active, I would not be concerned...they can spot for several weeks... |
Is diarrhea common after whelping? She had them on Saturday and that seems to be the case though this morning she went and it was slightly "harder" but still not a "stool". Also, a week before she had the puppies her eye turned red and then it went away. Last night we noticed mucus in her eye and it was green but just slightly (so much so it may not even quality as green but definitely not white). Could that be an infection of some sort? We took her temp Sunday and it was 101.1, yesterday was 101.8 which I know is still normal. I guess if it goes up again, should I be concerned? |

The eye issue is probably serious what did your vet say. At no times should eye discharge be gree. With that being said it is hard to differentiate. Regular tearing that is done is in small amounts clear to slightly black in color. Usually this makes its way onto the corners of the eyes and onto the side of the nose if not cleaned off by us the owners. I also noted the sclera of my new pups eyes having present prominent blood vessels extending along the eye. The vet told me this was probably irritation by the hair growing around the eye. This puppy upon getting him from the breeder had conjunctivitis, he was started on eye drops that day. Which cleared them up in 7 days. the drainage was copious and thick the eyes just didn't shine like they should have. WE caught it before it became too much of a problem. |
The vet said to clean her eye/area with warm water and see what happens. Like I said, it was not green green but not white like she usually gets. I'm real good about cleaning their eyes coz I hate their eyes getting all black in the corners. |
I hate the eyes getting like that too. I look at it as a pet peve. No one would let their children run around with dirty eyes (drainage) and dirty finger nails etc. I think they like to have it removed also. I know Angel will just set and let me comb it away after a bath or pick it off with my finger nail. I wonder if natural tears would help at all. I have bought tear drops from the pet store but it has been awhile. I know the Dr. has told us to wipe drainage from the chidlrens eyes with warm water when he had:animal-pa identified the drainage is from allergies. |
Sure hope things go okay for her. I hate to hear that there seems to be problems after whelping or during for that fact. There is always good information here from different ones that has been through the same things. |

All she really wants to do is eat, drink, and follow me around the house and eliminate. Other then that she sleeps. |
