Does size matter when breeding?
 
Hi I was wondering if size matters when breeding. I've heard that the male should be smaller than the female. Is this true? Thanks

Yes it matters, but it is not the only thing that is a concern. Lots of reading, lots of studying the pedigrees of the male and female.. Making sure they are great representations of their breed are equally as important. Looking at the grandparents is very important. Even a small male may have larger than normal parents and that combination could prove deadly for the female.

Size is just one consideration. Many of your top winning male Yorkies are in the 6 to 7 lbs range. Show breeders will often breed these males to females slightly smaller than them.

The size of a pup at the time of delivery has NOTHING to do with the size of the Dad!...The size of a puppy when it matures to adulthood has EVERYTHING to do with Genetics...

A puppy will only grow as big as the uterus has room for it to grow...That is why singleton litters, 3 puppy litters are so worrisome...You have a uterus in the shape of two horns that puppies develop in...When there is only one puppy in a horn it has more room to grow larger in than if it was sharing this horn with other siblings...

In all breeds of dogs typically males are larger than females, Yorkies are no exception...

That being said it is IMO extremely important to breed Yorkies that are good examples of the breed and to try and produce puppies that are so as well!

I've seen two 5 lb. Yorkies throw a 15 lb. puppy (when grown). So genetics is really important.

I stud my male out to only females who weigh 1 lb or more than he does. He is 3.5lbs so 4.5 and heavier is about right. Not to mention Tino has a long family history of alot of pups and they tend to run smaller in his pedigree so I wouldnt breed him to a small female in fear that she would have to get a c-section or something going wrong.
