stringy gook still hanging from new mommy Amber had her first puppy at 7:28pm last night. She had her last puppy at 11:53pm. She still has a green stringy looking gook hanging from her. Is this normal? Or does this mean she still has an after birth inside of her? Thank You |
Are all the placentas accounted for??? I recommend taking her to the vet for a oxytosin shot which will help her expel any residual. |
Yes, I would at least ask the vet. The oxytocin stimulates contractions and will not hurt her. I got one for my Molly after because I did not see all the placentas. Turned out that Molly did pass all the placentas before the injection. I thinks it is better to be safe and let the vet decide. |
ditto, she needs a clean out shot |
I gently pulled on it and the placenta slid out. There is nothing hanging there now. She looks clean in that area. Do you think I should still get her the shot? If I should is it something that can be done tomorrow when the vet is open. I would hate to bother him on a Sunday if I dont need to. But if I need to then I will :D |
problem Use a washcloth..grip the strings and gently pull down and out toward the belly..then go to the vet for a shot..best wishes.. PS..we posted at the same time...a shot within 24 hrs is best... |
The momma will continue to have a discharge for days after the puppies are born. This could be a retained placenta or afterbirth. Some females will have some bleeding up to 8 weeks after the pups are born. Be sure to monitor the momma temperature for the first week to make sure she is not getting an infection. |
We do not routinely give "clean-out" shots because if you have nursing puppies, they are releasing small amounts of oxytocin when they do. This helps clean out the uterus and contract the uterus back down to normal size. However...we account for all placentas during whelping...so if you are not 100% sure she delivered all placents then I would recommend the oxytocin injection today. She can get an infection if one is left in her uterus... |
