Swollen nipples I am not a breeder just a pet owner and I have a question, my Lexi just went into her first heat, now she has swollen nipples is that normal? She has not yet been spayed as we only have two girls and one 12 week old puppy thats a male. Hes being fostered here does not live here, I am just a little confused as to why herr nipples are swollen, she will be to the vet first of the week if this is not normal...Thanks in advance.. |

Hi Maya is in heat too (her second time) and her nipples are swollen aswell .... so I'd say it is normal ..... they went down after she was done the first time ..... BUT I am not an expert when it comes to that .... |
In my experience the nipples are hardly visible before the first heat (like in children). After the first heat however they are a lot more prominant. Cleos nipples did not go back to preheat size. They stayed fairly prominant. I relate it back to humans. In humans our boobs/ nipples get larger and never go back to they way they were before we reached sexual maturity. It's the same in dogs I gather. Nothign to worry about Then when they do get pregnant they look like bullets!! :sidesplt: Hope I was of some help to you! |
Yes, it is very common for the nipples to swell after a heat cycle. Some even get milk, then it is called a false pregnancy. Usually after about 63 days your girl will be back to normal. |

Roxie is 8 months okd and came into heat a week ago and her nipples are hard too. I thought they would go back to normal after she is through her heat? I thik my others did. |
Is my female Yorkie in heat?? My female Yorkie is 3 years old. I can't tell if she's in heat or not. Her nipples has gotten bigger than before. Today I noticed discharge from her vulva. Her vulva looks to not really swollen. Can she be in heat? She's never gotten pregnant before. P.S. I also noticed brown spots on her bedding. |
Bella is 9 months. As far as I know she hasn't gone into heat yet. But her nipples have gotten bigger. |

Just curious why your gal is not spayed yet? Unspayed females have a greater risk of getting mammary tumors & can get pyometra (uterine infection) which is life threatening. |

I would be a little concerned if she has a brown discharge. It could indicate an infection of some kind. You might want to have the vet check her. Do you have any intact males in your household? |
Is she in heat? My female is flagging. No discharge/blood. I think I missed her bleeding. When ever I take her on walks she pees a lot than usual. Her nipples are still swollen & vulva looks a bit swollen.. Can she be going out of heat? |
