Please tell me she's not pregnant... Can a dog get pregnant without being in heat? Kali escaped some weeks ago for 15 minutes and went on an adventure on a street near here (we have no clue to what she was doing, we looked for her for 5 minutes, so she had 10 to do stuff - more than enough with any stray dog...) and now I think she has put on weight and is acting very strange - almost possesive of her things when Mare, the younger one, wants to play. Please tell me dogs can't be pregnant without being in heat? *closing eyes and crossing fingers* |
If your little one was not in heat , the chance that she is pregnant are from none to 0 . |
Phew...thank you SO much! |
She could be going through a false pregnancy--not really pregnant, but acting like it. I've heard that sometimes lactation can even occur. |
Hi there Mette!! I can understand how worried you where when Kali went on her adventures!! I'd put my money on a false pregnancy too!! The vet should be able to put your mind at rest after a certain interval. Love and regards to you, Kali and Mare!! Ana, Gypsy Rose and Gizzie Chavi xxxx |
How do you know for sure she wasn't in heat. Not all dogs put off a significant amount of blood and a lot of dogs keep there private areas very clean. That might of been the reason she exscaped. |
She was in heat in May :) |
Well then that makes it pretty certain that she wasn't. |
Ha, ha - sorry, but this reminds me of a Peke I had - she got loose for hours and I had to call in and miss work and when I caught up with her she had like 20 dogs around her and I had to scare them off to get to her and I went to vet crying saying she'd been raped (she was a Mess! all slobbered and tired and crying and dirty and just a mess) and I was hysterical and the vet was laughing at me - he had me leave her, gave her a shot of something to keep her from getting pg (one of those dogs was a German Shepard!) and they bathed her and groomed her. I picked that dang dog up and she thought she was the cat's meow after all that attention. That was her first heat. I got her spayed. Lesson learned. |
If she wasn't in heat, than she can't get pregnant. But false pregnancy usually happens after a heat cycle. Are you sure she wasn't in heat?? |
My female was in heat late march early april and was in heat again early July! |
She has gone back to normal behaviour and is mommas good little girl again. We also found out why she looked fat - she found some bread in the garden that she ate and it was bad so she farted like hell for a few days  :D Thanks for taking the time to answer :) |
From my experiences, it takes more than 10-15 minutes for the whole breeding to take place... as they will lock the male is swollen and it take several minutes up to a 1/2 hour for them to disconnect.... Now they can tie up in a second but the breeding process is a little longer. If she wasn't in heat I doubt she would even let a male try to mount her and she wouldn't have been ovulating... to become pregnant. Some false pregnancies can become serious for some females so if she is showing signs of this watch her closely. |
