2nd litter....one pup didn't make last two needed intervention.....
 

Hi everyone, I posted here quite a bit last year when Missy had her first litter. She carried 5 pups her first litter and 2 didn't make it. They both had there intestines on the outside of them :( She just had her second litter this morning. She wasn't due until Tuesday, but I woke up this morning and she had had one pup and it was doing well. The second pup came about 30 mintues later.......this pup was breech and I feel like I didn't intervine soon enough. She was still born, so I thought.......no movement and blue tongue etc.... I let the dam work on her a bit and we tried reviving and nothing worked. Well then.............the 3rd pup arrived breech also, I was quicker getting this little guy out, but we still had to revived him for about 35-40 minutes. Infact, both the last two pups we had to work on for that length of time to get them to breath on there own. There was no life in them. I regret that I didn't spend enough time on the 2nd little girl, maybe she would have made it????? After all of this, I am wondering if there is something wrong with my female or if her diet is lacking something???? I know other breeders and their whelping goes like clock work. Did I intervene too much??? The smallest is 3.4 oz, and I am a bit worried about him. He will latch on to a teat, but not really look for it himself, I have to bring him to it. Should I supplement him even if he is getting some from mom??? Thanks for all of your help.

so sorry to hear about the ones who didn't make it. Sometimes there is just nothing that works. As for the smallest, keep helping to place him on the mom. Make sure that he is getting his belly full. You may have to weigh him before he eats and again after to make sure he is doing ok. He should get stroinger. If you don't feel like he is getting enough, by all means you can suppliment him, but it is important to let him nurse from Mom first, then give him a little suppliment if he needs it.

Thank you Sunnie :) He weighed about 3.3/3.4 oz at birth this morning around 10am. I weighed him again just now and he is 3.5oz :) He is gaining. He is obviously smaller and weaker than the other two, so I will be watching him closely. I would prefer he gets his mom's milk rather than me having to supplement. Her smallest in her first litter was 2.5oz!!!! Too small for me!!! Any ideas why I lose a pup or two each litter???? I am new at this (I've been breeding horses for years, although I understand that dogs are MUCH different). I've had a few minor problems with my horses, but have never lost a foal. Is it more common than not to lose pups with the smaller breeds? Thanks again for all your help :)

Were both of the litters bred with the same male? Sometimes the combination just isn't a good match. I can't speak for anyone else but it's very unusual for us to lose a puppy and we have an average whelp weight in the 3.5 oz range.

Hello. Sorry you're going thru complications. Hopefully some experienced breeders will come along and give you some advice.

I'm not a breeder but going by what I've learned, it sounds like you didn't wait 1 heat cycle before you bred Missy again...could this have anything to do with it? Not sure but I thought it was always better to skip a heat cycle before breeding the female again.

It's hard to say why some survive and some don't. It could be a genetic problem, it could be the size, it could be they got chilled. Nothing kills a puppy faster than getting chilled. Make sure the temperature where they are is at least 80-85 degrees for at least a week, then if they are doing okay, you can gradually lower it a few degrees per week. I also keep a sheet or light blaket wrapped around the x-pen so there are no drafts. If you are using a box or a crate, you can cover it lightly with a sheet at night to help keep them warm and draft free. I have lost puppies too.. an entire litter of three. But the biggest in that litter was barely 2 ounces. The next litter was 3.5 ounces each and they did fine. I don't know what causes some to be born unresponsive as I haven't experienced that. Well, I guess I kind of did with the first litter. The second baby born never did get breathing good no matter how much I stimulated or suctioned him. But he also only weighewd 1.75 ounces. Just make sure you keep them warm. I cannot stress that enough. It is so important because you cannot feed a chilled puppy, it can kill them. I hope the others are doing ok.

Don't they go into heat every 6 months? If it's been a year since her last delivery... that would mean she skipped a heat...

I believe the average is 8 months for yorkies... some are 10-12 months. The bigger breeds can be 6 months

I agree... try another male. If it continues to happen, I would "retire" your female. Best of luck with the puppies. It sounds like the little one is doing fine... he's gaining... :thumbup:
