Skittles lil guy, help needed Well it looks as if Skittles is picking on/ rejecting the smallest pup. I am assuming it’s because I am handling him more than the others or maybe she realizes he is the smallest. Not all the time but a few times during the day she will pick him up and put him in the other lil bed I have next to her and go back to her other 3 pups. Or she will even take him off the teat. He is not putting on weight like he should be and I think that is due to him not being a stronger sucker like his brothers. I say that cuz I put him on a teat and sit there and watch over him for a good while. My husband and I have been rotating watching over him. I will be getting an eye dropper and start supplementing him. Since he is sucking maybe the eye dropper will help him and in a week or so his sucking reflex will be stronger. I'll still keep puttin him on the teat in between the eye dropper feedings. Is there anything else I should be doing? |
I am sorry he is not doing so well. Make sure he is warm. You may want to try tubing him or using a bottle to feed him, but keep giving him time on the teat. Hopefully he will make some progress and soon be accepted like the rest. |
I had that exact thing happen once. The mom just would not take that pup. My vet said something was not just right with the pup when checked on that first day. He didn't survive. |

Yes, the mothers can usually tell if this is the case, but we still try to save them. Occasionally we are successful. |

Oh don't say that. Well he doesnt have a cleft palate and is mobile like the rest. I mean he can scoot and root to find a teat, his cries sound like the others too. I really think it's from my over handling of him cuz it just started in the late afternoon yesterday. I will keep trying with this lil guy. Thanks |

Oh you werent too blunt! You know how it is when you know something but just dont want to hear it out loud...seems to make it more real when said out loud. Well unfortunately he hasnt gained and hasnt lost since the am. I'm going to get some beef liver tonight and start trying that. Thanks for asking.. |
Happy to report... That I just got him to drink from the bottle. I just kind of eye balled the amount I put in there, I know not good. But he is now 2 3/8 oz up from 2 1/8. So should I feed him again in 2 hours or sooner? |
feed him every two hours depending on if his belly feels full. How much are you giving him at a time? let him nurse first. Pick the biggest fullest teat for him and kind of hold the others back where they can't knock him off. that is usually what happens with these little guys. You handling him has nothing to do with it. Old wives tale. After he has nursed, feel his belly. if he still isn't full, then supplement. |
I gave him roughly 2 tsp. he was still full 2 hours later so another 1.5 later he drank 1 tsp of the supplement. Skittles has not seperated him from the bunch since early this afternoon despite all of my handling of him...so maybe it is a wives tale! Yea, I definitely keep the others away while he is nursing or least sit and make sure they do not knock him off. Thanks Quote:

glad he is doing better, I don't think handling him had anything to do with it, I handle mine from the time they were born, and never had a problem with mom not wanting them. Good luck and keep us updated.:) |
Awww, sending prayers that the little guy gets enough to eat and does well. I'll betcha that's the cute one all by himself with mom in the pictures, huh? Keep us updated on his progress; I'll certainly be checking back in on him myself. |
I hope he's doing better during the night!! I'll check back for an update in the am! |
How's our boy this morning? |
