Skittles... Well of course pup #2 latches on to a teat like an ol pro. The others definitely root for one and they all manage to find the same one. I am offering up her other ones and I'm sure they will catch on soon enough. Skittles is fine with them til I start to move them around and then she licks them like crazy. The smallest boy has latched on but Skittles will lick him right on the head, knocking him off. I try to rest a hand so to block her face but rub her belly at the same time. I realise I have to make sure that one gets on there every chance he gets, as I do not want to lose him. Oh man, it's going to be long restless night! Uh when does it get easier, after week 1? or not even... lol Thanks everyone |
Yep, I would say definintely watch them close for at LEAST the first week....maybe longer, especially with the tiny 2+ ounce baby I saw that you had. Just be sure they all get plenty of nursing time and maybe give the little one some "alone" nursing time and maybe even supplements. I've only had one litter so far and was blessed with it being basically trouble free. I'll be praying for your little ones. Please keep us posted and we'll be anxiously awaiting pictures. |
Dont wait.. Nala had 8 puppies five weeks ago. 3 were under 3 oz..My one lil man was around the 2 1/2 oz . I started supplementing right away. If you cant get them latched on and nursing WELL. I'd start this too. The little guy took awhile longer to be able to nurse on his own then the other 2. But within the week all were doing well. Dont wait for trouble... Start supplementing soon if he's not staying latched on and nursing well. I can not stress this enough... |
Well when I woke up this morning 3 were latched on, so I was relieved and pup#2 was one of them! So they are all finding a teat with out to much assistance from me. Now, how do I keep Skittles from going to the other bed and getting the bigger ones if I am just wanting the lil guy to nurse? She jumps up and comes to me when I am weighting them like she is saying ok lady give them back and of course she'll spend the next 10 mins licking them and etc.. lol Pup #2 weighted in at 2 7/8 up from 2 3/4 the others had all put on a 1/4 to 2/4 of an ounce as well. So they are all doing really well so far. I have to go to a Memorial thing but when i get back I'll post the pics I have. |
Just bumping this to see if anyone can answer my question... Oh and should Skittles still be panting off and on? |
I am so sorry your post was over looked yesterday. How are the pups doing this morning? Usually when I have a smaller puppy I will just get him to latch and I move the other pups up by the momma head or to other nipples and I will just sit there until he has nursed. It is also important to get up during the night to make sure he is nursing. Weak pups can go down hill really fast during the night if they miss a meal. Panting is very common for nursing mommas. Just make sure she is not running any temperature. Is momma eating well? |
Thanks for getting back to me. That is what I have been doing. Putting him on and moving the others around. They all have full lil bellies and are on the teat all day it seems if not trying to get back on one! Oh yes Skittles is eating fine. She got up and went potty for the 1st time yesterday, so I was happy. I'll be taking everyone to the vet tomorrow. I hope Skittles lets me give her a bath, whew! she stinks! Quote:

I am glad to hear they are doing well. Good luck tomorrow. |
Just a lil quick update on Skittles Quad. They are all doing well and gaining. 2 of them have already doubled their birth weight! Lil one is gaining but it’s slow and steady. Is it common for momma to put a baby outside of her lil bed? I’m assuming cuz maybe she thinks he has nursed enough, or something. Skittles did this the other night several times. I notice 1 or 2 of them trying to get up, like they are standing and trying to walk. It’s so cute. They are just so precious. I look forward to them getting a lil more mobile and opening their eyes…and seeing what kind of personality they will have. |
Well they have all opened their eyes! They are just too cute! Now this morning I noticed there were only 3 in the bed. I was looking frantically for the smallest named Chollo. Well Skittles had put him under our bed! Why would she do that?????? and she ill still occasionally put one of them outside of the bed. |

Please understand I am just saying this as we had a similar exp. w/ a Mother (beagle) who would constantly push this certain little one, who was also the runt, away and out of the whelping box. She started doing this day 1. I had to nurse this little guy, whom I named Leppy for 2 weeks. Poor Little Leppy didn't make it. :( It was as if the Mother knew he wasn't well and didn't want him around the rest of the litter (of 9 pups) But I see you said it happened to 2 diff pups, from what I understood. Maybe and praying it is a whole diff reason of her doing this then what we had, but I just wanted to share a similar exp Do you have any pics up of Skittles new family?!?! I would love to see them :) |
