Sensitive Question My six month old male cannot calm down. My 18 month old female is at the tail end of her heat and he constantly dogs her. He did eat tonight, but his skin is warm to the touch and sometimes he gets so worked up his tongue hangs out and he pants. Now I know this is a natural thing, but he cannot reach her yet which is a good thing, because he is too young. Whenever I take her out of his proximity he cries. Is there something that I can do for him to get him to give up the fight so to speak? I feel bad for the little guy. He's obsessed. Thanks for your kind input on this sensitive issue :p |
I've never had an un-nuetered male around a female in heat, so I really don't know exactly what to do, but would maybe taking him for a long walk to get some energy out of him help? |
It sounds like you will be having your hands full every heat cycle. I go though the same thing. You will just have to keep them separated. Mine pace, bark, whine and carry on the whole 3 weeks. It is not good to let him stay with her when she is in heat, he will just wear himself out. Ideally, you should have them in separate rooms so he won't get as frustrated. If you are planning to use him for breeding then you better get used to it. Also, the males will start marking a lot as they get older. |
I would do that if it were light out, but unfortunately it is dark and we have Coyotes around the house. Do you keep them separated from the beginning of the heat? How do your males do? |
He will be showing as soon as I find a good trainer in my area and based on his conformation he may be bred, but I def. don't want any accidents. I will get used to the whining. Separate rooms? Wow. May have to turn the spare bedroom into a doggie room after summer rental season. Just pulled the gate across the living room and put the girls in the kitchen. I will have to make another trip to the pet store chain to get another enclosure for the kitchen...LOL I guess there are no "hands on" solutions? Is that something that is a no no? What do the professionals do? Just let him cool down on his own? |

Oh, he's already marking. Doggie door into a fenced in yard and all, LOL |

Sage had a Split Heat Cycle on me which meant she went back into heat again a Month after she had her orginal 1st Heat Cycle, I never brought my boys back into our Yorkie room, if I had of I may of been whelping puppies due to her Split Heat Cycle and me never going through it. Sofie just finished her Heat Cycle and Weezie is still yet to have hers. So from experience with 1 Split Heat Cycle I will NEVER allow my Males and Female together until 6 weeks from the END of their Heat Cycles, I just want to make sure that we don't have no accidents. With that being said my Boys are staying in my living room until well maybe all year long who knows with having 3 girls and all their Heat Cycle coming in different Months they may not be ables to visit each other till next year??? Time will tell. I would get him and her away from each other, maybe take one to a bedroom or ??? But the further away they are the better behaved your boy will be...& this will allow him to calm down on his own. And NEVER under estimate a MALE Yorkie...They will do what ever they have to in order to get to a female in heat & they have been known to get through gates before. And his marking will get worse with age, right before Sage started her Heat Cycle I had all 5 of them together in our Yorkie room, Mr. Galahad was bound and determined to let my Teddy know Sage was his, I timed him, he marked 18 times in like 15 minutes...He had a band on and needless to say it was wet and after that I took our boys to the living room. When you 1st separate them oh yeah he's gonna hoop and holler and go on but he'll get use to it...He may still go on some but not as bad as when you 1st separate them. Have you tried taking him for a walk or outside for a little bit when he gets to hollering? I take my boys outside for like 10 minutes and they are happy campers marking outside and then come in and sleep like babies. We have a laundry tub in our Yorkie room for our Yorkies to get baths in well the girls get to use it all the time and our 2 boys gets their baths in our bathtub as I don't want to get them started wanting our girls lol. It is hard but we do what we have to in order to prevent any accidents. I hate our boys being in the playpen but it's better safe then sorry. I also let them out to run in the living room, kitchen and hallway everyday (With our bedroom door closed from the hallway, I just don't like to aggravate them or get them started) so that helps them. I hope I've helped you in some way and good luck with your little man :) Lee |
Thanks for all the wonderful advice. wow, 6 weeks from the end? Is that after she stops having discharge? Or do you tack on another 9 days after that and then begin the 6 weeks? I wish I had another male to keep him company. He has settled down quite a bit. He is not crying like he was. I too have a lot of work to do before there is any shennanigans going on. They have an appointment for all their tests and I ordered two DNA kits from AKC. They are both registered. Next one to come into heat will be the little one and she will not be bred, so I need to get her fixed asap. My vet can't see her til June 21 and she will be six months on June 26, so I may need to find another vet. I also need to get the other two Ortho certified and I am not sure he does that either. We'll see, it's all a grand adventure with lots of responsibility. They are so precious. It's important to do right by them for sure. |

Maybe some more experienced breeders will come and answer your other questions. Yes they are precious and it is very very good you ask questions and are trying to do the right thing for your babies. Hope everything turns out for you. Just watch them very closely and maybe put them in seperate rooms where you can close the Door...I don't trust crates, playpens or gates to keep mine apart males can be very very determined to get to any female in heat...So I just don't take no chances. Yes it is a Grand Adventure when males want to make sure the other males knows that all the females are his or so he thinks they are his lol...You talking marking!!! Oh yeah it gets bad...I use belly bands when they go out in our living room and kitchen, they do help. Oh and if you take them outside to potty...What I do is take my girls out back yard and my boys in the front yard and do this with them when they go outside to play as not to bug our boys anymore then they are already lol. It is hard to do this but it can be done. I just wish my Weezie would come into heat and get it done she is my last gal left to have her heat cycle for a few months. My boys and girls hasn't been together in the same room since Sage 1st went into heat on February 25th. Hope I've helped you in some way. :) Lee |

Having another male around to keep you male company would not work to settle him down. Then you would have two crying males.LOL |

update on sensitive question Thanks for all your help guys! He is now past the crying stage and she is safely out of heat, but he developed some soft stool as a result of all the upsetment and he was quite testy with our 5 month old (Cleo) once Princess went out of heat. It could have been that he was just not feeling well too. I guess having another male would not be a good idea. They are all getting along like peas in a pod now, but Cleo is a little leary of him still. I have started training with them now and am reading a book by Ceasar and trying to be the pack leader more. It's amazing what a few simple changes in the routine/household can do for a doggie situation. |
Thank you for the update. I am glad to hear things are a little better now. Best wishes on your training. I have the book but have never read it (it was a gift), I think maybe I should, thanks for the reminder. |
