Yorkie Pup Info Request We are new Yorkie owners, our female is 16 weeks old, and love her so much we decided to get another. We found a male that was born on 05/02/2008 and we went to visit him tonight. We noticed his claws are light in color. Our current girl has always had black claws but we didn't even see her until she was 8 weeks old. We read somewhere that the nails should be black. Is this common or are we looking at a problem? (i.e.-a mixed breed) The breeder said that they would turn dark, eventually black, as he got older. Can anyone help??? Thanks! |
It's common for young Yorkies to have lighter claws early on. It's usually just a couple of them that are light, not the whole set. Claw color alone should not alarm you about him being a mix breed. Three weeks old is very young to select a puppy though. Yorkies change appearance more than any breed I know as they grow. I can never fairly evaluate my pups until they are 10 to 12 weeks old. Congrats on your new baby!! :aimeeyork :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :) |
If by claws, you mean toenails, yes sometimes they will have one or two white ones. Eventually, they will turn black. i have a litter now that two of the pups had one or two white toenails on one of their feet. No it does not mean mixed breed but actually is quite common. some will even have a little white fur on a foot. That eventually will turn gold or tan. Not to worry!!!!! |
I often have many pups with white tips on the toes and white toenails at birth and they do turn black when they get older. I have never had one that stayed white. It should not be a problem. |
Many thanks to all. We feel much better. |
