I know this topic has been brought up before, but for some reason lately I've had several people ask me about using one of my boys as a stud. I don't know how I feel about that...

I don't really like the idea of their offspring being somewhere that I don't know about...so it would take a lot to convince me in the first place. However, that being said, if I DO decide to do it...the female will have to have documentation of testing, obviously.

My question is...how much should I charge? I'm sure it makes a difference what pedigree the sire has, and another thing I would want to consider is having pick of the litter, if I like the females features. Do I allow THEM to choose whether I get a stud fee or pick of the litter, or should I just simply say what I want?

I'm 100% undecided on this subject now, so...What are your thoughts on this?

I'm glad you brought this up. I have a male that several people have inquired about using as a stud. I understand about matching the dogs properly and the health screening but have found that stud contracts have widely varying terms as far as fees or a pick of the litter. So far I haven't agreed to it because I'm really undecided about whether I want to do it and what would be fair and equitable if I did. Isn't it standard to get first choice, or the amount of the sale of one pup for a stud service? I have never done this, but had heard that somewhere.

Nicki I have and do stud out my boys.Only to certain people and they have to have all their testing done.
I Have never took pick of the litter.
I charge 650 for mine. If no pups then I do not refund they get another breeding (have never had no pups) if they get a sinlgeton I rebreed also.(have never had one of those either)

You can charge whatever you want.Some charge the price of a pup some less some more.

This can be a very tricky situation. First of all you have to ask what are the risks to you and your breeding program. In our area there have been a couple of kennels that I know of that were shut down because of brucellosis. You would want to be sure your male was tested and any female you bred to. You would want to make sure the female you bred to was a good representative of the breed. What about the genetic background of the female you are breeding to? Even if she is sound you will not know if there is a history of LP or liver shunt in her back ground. If you breed to an outsider and their bitch produces a liver shunt puppy are you willing to deal with all the back lash that can come from that? These are just some things to think about. I have studded my males on a couple of occasions and on those occasions I charged $300. One time I got a pick of the litter female. My honest feeling is that pick of the litter is asking too much. Some people are okay with giving up pick of the litter but I know if I was to go to an outside male I would rather pay a flat fee. In the case where I got pick of the litter I let my friend have another stud service free of charge to make it more fair. My preference right now is to not stud my dogs.

Really good points Barbara...I hadn't thought about the back lash thing for a liver shunt or something later. Trust me, IF I do this I will be EXTREMELY picky about the female and I will have to add it to my list to research her background as well. :thumbup:
