Question How to tell the puppies apart? What is best method on telling the pups apart besides gender? Ribbon, is it ok to tie around the neck? Food coloring? Nail polish? I want to make sure when Gina's pups are born that if I have more than one sex I will be able to tell them apart. I do have different color ribbon that I intended to use but just wanted to know how safe is this method. I don't want a puppy to choke. Any insight would be appreciated! Barbara |
I've heard of momma's that will remove those bands of string. Breeding friend of mine...painted the nails of one paw with non toxic children's paint. |
Yes, my momma managed to undo all the ribbons I put on my last litter. Luckily her pups usually have some small white markings, so I was able to tell them apart, next time I think I will try to color the nails.:) |

I put a little strip of fingernail polish down their back and let it dry before giving them back to mom. So far it has worked well. |
I've seen some pups with little tiny stickers on their tummies...either with numbers or colors. I normally just look at the different characteristics (fat, skinny, white bootie, white chest, floppy ears etc) |
Thanks so much for the information. I think I will try to paint a nail. That seems easy enough. |
Hey I tried the nail polish route once, and for my very first litter (when I even weighed them everyday on a digital baby scale) I used the colored ponytail holders (the ones made out of cloth) that came in different colors. I think you can see that in my photo gallery from 2005. This is my fifth litter, and when they get a little bit bigger you can tell them apart from their size, different little markings, personality. |
